BPW Debuts Wheelend ECO Pro at IAA 2026

BPW unveils the Wheelend ECO Pro at IAA Transportation 2026, cutting 44 lb per 9-tonne trailer axle with an 8-year unlimited-mileage warranty, a bionic hub and brake disc, and series production from 2030.

BPW’s new Wheelend ECO Pro reduces the weight of a 9-tonne trailer axle with offset-120 disc brakes by 44 lb (20 kg) and carries an 8-year warranty with no mileage limit. The company unveiled the wheel end this week at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany. According to BPW, the Wheelend ECO Pro is a fundamentally redesigned running gear solution for what the company calls Europe’s highest-volume axle segment, pairing a redesigned hub and bearing arrangement with a patent-pending bionic wheel hub and brake disc. Small-scale production begins in 2027, with series production following in 2030.

Why the 9-Tonne Segment Matters

BPW describes the 9-tonne (roughly 19,840 lb) axle class as the backbone of European road freight, with more than three-quarters of trailers in this class now fitted with disc brakes at an offset of 120. The company frames the segment as the benchmark for improvements in European freight transport rather than a niche, and says the Wheelend ECO Pro was designed specifically for its requirements.

The wheel end transfers load to the road, affects energy efficiency, and drives operating costs through maintenance requirements and vehicle availability, BPW notes.

How Much Weight Does the Wheelend ECO Pro Save?

BPW says less weight means greater usable load and an immediate economic benefit for operators. The Wheelend ECO Pro reduces the weight of each axle by 44 lb (20 kg), which the company says creates 132 lb (60 kg) of additional usable load capacity on a three-axle vehicle.

The wheel end can be paired with either the ECO Air air suspension, BPW’s solution for high-volume trailers, or the Airlight II air suspension with its LightTube trailing arm. Combined with Airlight II, the saving rises to 75 lb (34 kg) per axle, according to the company.

“We have perfectly tuned the disc brake to the 9-tonne segment, completely redesigned the hub and bearings, adapted the axle nut design and optimised the interface between the wheel end and the axle, thereby maximising the usable load in every detail without compromising on stability and durability,” says Bernhard Rossenbach, Head of BPW Product Management.

Warranty and Serviceability

BPW offers an 8-year warranty with no mileage limit on the Wheelend ECO Pro upon registration, which the company says is unique in the trailer market. BPW positions the warranty as giving operators greater planning certainty and operating costs that can be forecast over the long term.

Despite the redesign, BPW’s ECO principle for time-saving servicing, such as brake disc changes, remains intact, the company says. An integrated pulling device allows quick removal of the wheel end via the central axle nut, using what BPW calls the Formula 1 method, without additional tools. The company says the design also helps minimize potential sources of error during maintenance and increases vehicle availability.

Bionic Wheel Hub and Brake Disc

The Wheelend ECO Pro derives its robustness from a new, patent-pending bionic wheel hub and brake disc, according to BPW. The company says the hub’s organic-looking shape follows the lines of force at the wheel end and, taking its cue from nature, distributes material only where it is needed.

Rolling Resistance and Fuel Consumption

BPW retains its stepped bearing system while reducing friction within the bearing to a minimum, the company says. According to BPW, the result is lower rolling resistance in the 9-tonne segment, which reduces fuel consumption and the operating costs vehicle operators face.

Production Timeline

IAA Transportation 2026 marks the launch of the Wheelend ECO Pro, with small-scale production from 2027 and series production from 2030.

“All in all, we have filed patent applications for five technical highlights relating to this new development,” says Bernhard Rossenbach. “At our exhibition stand, we’re giving customers a first glimpse into our new technology.”
