CDTL EMB Brake Enters Small-Series Vehicle Use

CDTL says its electromechanical braking system, now in small-series vehicle use, cuts vehicle weight by more than 220 lb, shortens braking distance about 10% and reduces braking-system energy use up to 85.4%.

CDTL’s electromechanical braking (EMB) system has entered small-series vehicle application, with the company reporting a weight reduction of more than 220 lb (100 kg) per vehicle. The system is on display this week at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany, alongside the distributed electric drive axles that make up the bulk of the company’s exhibit at Hall 21, Stand D37. CDTL positions EMB as one half of an actuation package that also includes drive-by-wire and steer-by-wire technology for heavy-duty trucks and buses.

What Does CDTL Claim for the EMB System?

The company reports three vehicle-level effects from its EMB system: a weight cut of more than 220 lb (100 kg), a braking-distance improvement of about 10% and an energy-consumption reduction in the braking system of up to 85.4%. CDTL frames these as gains in lightweighting, braking performance and energy efficiency. The release does not specify a vehicle platform, test conditions or the baseline system against which these figures are measured.

How Does EMB Fit With Distributed E-Drive?

CDTL’s exhibit pairs the EMB system with distributed electric drive axles that eliminate the mechanical differential and manage torque at each wheel electronically. The company’s flagship EA5000NP axle produces up to 900 kW peak power in an 800 V configuration and, according to CDTL, has been deployed in more than 3,000 vehicles.

The company says the industry’s shift toward electrified, intelligent and autonomous commercial vehicles is putting more emphasis on brake-by-wire and core actuation capability, and it describes the booth as drawing vehicle manufacturers and other value-chain companies for technical discussions on the show’s press day.

CDTL is the latest supplier to move EMB from prototype toward the road. Haldex previewed a commercial vehicle EMB at an earlier IAA, and Chery announced earlier this year that its Exeed EX7 would carry the first mass-produced EMB system on a passenger vehicle.
