Knorr-Bremse Honored with Global Sustainability Impact Award

Knorr-Bremse has been recognized by Schneider Electric with the 2024 Global Sustainability Impact Award for its ambitious decarbonization strategy, renewable energy leadership, and supply chain sustainability initiatives.

  • Knorr-Bremse receives Schneider Electric’s 2024 Global Sustainability Impact Award for leadership in decarbonization and digitalization.
  • Only German company among seven global winners.
  • Targets net-zero emissions by 2050; 75% Scope 1 & 2 and 25% Scope 3 reductions by 2030.
  • Over 99% renewable electricity already achieved across global operations.

Knorr-Bremse AG, the global leader in braking systems and a key supplier for rail and commercial vehicles, has been awarded the Global Sustainability Impact Award 2024 by Schneider Electric, recognizing its outstanding commitment to sustainable transformation and emissions reduction.

The accolade highlights Knorr-Bremse’s comprehensive climate strategy, which includes a commitment to achieve net-zero emissions across all scopes by 2050. Interim goals call for a 75% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions (from 2018 levels) and a 25% reduction in relevant Scope 3 emissions (from 2021 levels) by 2030.

Decarbonization and Energy Efficiency

Knorr-Bremse’s efforts have already delivered substantial results. The company now sources 99% of its electricity from renewable energy and has deployed a stringent energy efficiency program across all sites. Additional initiatives include transitioning from fossil fuels and implementing advanced monitoring systems to reduce overall consumption.

The company’s Austrian subsidiary, Zelisko, plays a crucial role in Schneider Electric’s decarbonization efforts by supplying instrument transformers and sensors that enhance energy flow measurement and control.

Sustainable Supply Chain and Product Portfolio

Knorr-Bremse’s sustainability roadmap extends beyond its own operations. It is actively decarbonizing its supply chain through the sourcing of low-emission materials and promoting energy efficiency improvements among suppliers.

Furthermore, the company’s products support customer sustainability goals by enabling energy-efficient and low-emission operation during the use phase—key factors for achieving full lifecycle environmental gains.

Recognition for Consistent Performance

Schneider Electric’s jury named Knorr-Bremse one of the most consistent participants in its Zero Carbon Project, which supports global partners in cutting carbon emissions.

“The award conferred by our partner Schneider Electric is testament to our commitment to a sustainable future,” said Frank Weber, CFO of Knorr-Bremse AG. “Sustainability is central to our corporate strategy and a key success factor—environmentally and economically.”

The 2024 Sustainability Impact Award recognized seven companies globally, selected from over 450 applicants, with Knorr-Bremse the only German winner.
