ZF Showcases Innovative Trailer Tech

ZF's CVS division presents cutting-edge trailer technologies at NUFAM, emphasizing decarbonization via TrailTrax, safety with iEBS, and digitalization through SUMS for efficient, sustainable transport.

ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division is highlighting advanced technologies for trailer manufacturers and fleets at the NUFAM commercial vehicle trade fair in Karlsruhe, Germany. The focus centers on decarbonization, driving safety, chassis systems, and digital technologies to make road freight transport more efficient, safer, and smarter. ZF hosts panel discussions with manufacturers and fleet customers on trailer trends at its booth in Hall 1, Booth 125.

Key Highlights

  • TrailTrax electrification system integrates ZF’s electric drive into trailers for CO2 reduction.
  • Intelligent Electronic Braking System (iEBS) combines ABS and EBS for enhanced safety and new functionalities.
  • SUMS Service Suite provides modular software update management for trailers, ensuring compliance with international standards.
  • ZF collaborates with leading manufacturers like Kässbohrer and Krone to advance trailer innovations.
  • Technologies support hybrid and plug-in solutions, reducing emissions by up to 40%.

ZF positions itself as a trusted partner for trailer manufacturers and fleets, emphasizing compatibility between truck and trailer systems. This approach delivers unique solutions for safe, intelligent, efficient, and sustainable goods transport, as stated by Christiaan Verschueren, Vice President Trailer Solutions at ZF.

Decarbonization with TrailTrax

As tractor units reach high efficiency levels, ZF’s TrailTrax e-trailer solution addresses future regulations by integrating a 210 kW AxTrax 2 electric axle, trailer EBS, battery box, and control unit into the trailer. This provides additional electric drive support and recovers braking energy. When paired with a combustion-powered truck, it achieves up to 16% CO2 reduction, escalating to 40% with a plug-in option. ZF works with manufacturers such as Kässbohrer and Krone, who have already showcased the system. The setup effectively converts a combustion-powered truck-trailer combination into a hybrid vehicle and can extend the range of electric trucks.

Safety Solution: iEBS

ZF’s intelligent electronic braking system (iEBS) suits all trailer types, enhancing safety and efficiency by merging ABS and EBS systems. As part of ZF’s global Intelligent Braking Platform, it offers configurations for conventional and air suspension systems in Basic, Standard, and Premium versions. Benefits include fast installation, simplified maintenance, and streamlined inventory for manufacturers and workshops, boosting operational efficiency and fleet uptime. Over 40 additional functions—enabled by integrating brake systems, sensors, and electronic chassis controls—improve overall safety and comfort in truck-trailer combinations. Features like tire pressure monitoring further support everyday transport operations.

Digital Solution: SUMS

ZF CVS introduces the Software Update Management System (SUMS), a comprehensive digital solution for trailer manufacturers. SUMS ensures compliance with international standards, including UNECE Regulation R156, which mandates software updates for functional safety and cybersecurity throughout a vehicle’s lifecycle. The SUMS Service Suite offers an end-to-end support toolkit, enabling intelligent and secure software updates. This modular package helps manufacturers maintain trailers effectively, meeting cybersecurity needs from production to end-of-life.
