Jeep Cherokee Recall: 241 SUVs Flagged for ABS and ESC Defect

Chrysler is recalling 241 model-year 2026 Jeep Cherokee SUVs for a Brake System Control Module defect that can disable anti-lock braking and electronic stability control, with no warning indicator to alert the driver.

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling 241 model-year 2026 Jeep Cherokee SUVs over a defect in the Brake System Control Module (BSCM) that can compromise anti-lock braking and electronic stability control. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on April 9, 2026, covers vehicles built during a narrow 23-day window and carries a “Do Not Drive, Park Outside” consumer advisory.

Highlights

  • NHTSA Campaign Number 26V223 covers 241 Jeep Cherokee vehicles produced between December 4 and December 27, 2025
  • Suspect Brake System Control Modules can cause incorrectly functioning ABS and ESC without prior warning
  • BSCM supplier identified as ZF North America; component part number 68724672AB
  • Dealers will recalibrate BSCM software at no charge; owner notifications begin April 28

Scope of the Recall

The campaign affects an estimated 100 percent of the 241 potentially involved vehicles, all built at Chrysler’s assembly facility during a three-week production window. Vehicles produced before December 4 or after December 27 used a different BSCM calibration and are not included. FCA US determined the suspect period through supplier, engineering release, and vehicle production records.

Chrysler’s internal recall number is 29D. VINs tied to the campaign become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning April 16, 2026.

Nature of the Defect

According to the Part 573 Safety Recall Report, incorrectly functioning ABS and ESC can result in compromised vehicle control. The filing states the defect can lead to a crash without prior warning, and notes that no warning indicator illuminates when the fault occurs. The absence of a driver-facing alert is significant: unlike several recent Stellantis ABS campaigns, which centered on software that failed to trigger the ESC telltale lamp, this defect can affect the braking and stability systems themselves without any dashboard notification.

The BSCM at issue was supplied by ZF North America, headquartered in Northville, Michigan. The component carries part number 68724672AB.

Chronology and Remedy

FCA US’s Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance organization opened its investigation on February 12, 2026, after identifying vehicles potentially built with suspect modules. Through February and March, the TSRC group worked with FCA engineering, manufacturing, and supplier quality teams to establish root cause and scope. The Vehicle Regulations Committee formally determined a safety defect existed on April 2, 2026.

As of March 4, 2026, FCA US reported no warranty claims, customer assistance records, field reports, accidents, or injuries related to the issue in any market.

The remedy is a software recalibration. Dealers will update the BSCM with a corrected software version free of charge. Dealer notifications are scheduled for April 16, 2026, with owner notification letters following on April 28. Owners can contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall number 29D.

Pattern of Stellantis Brake-System Campaigns

The Cherokee recall is the latest in a series of Stellantis brake-control-module campaigns. Earlier 2026 saw a separate Stellantis action covering more than 456,000 Ram and Jeep vehicles for a trailer tow module defect, which also included a small number of 2026 Cherokees. In early 2025, Chrysler recalled 2018-2019 Grand Cherokee and Durango models for an ABS module malfunction that could disable both ABS and ESC. The Cherokee campaign’s sub-300-unit scope makes it an unusually small action within that pattern, reflecting the tightly bounded supplier production window.
