The world continues to grow smaller as technology renders distances virtually irrelevant when it comes to communication. Another way it is virtually shrinking pertains to governmental regulations on industrial activities. Individual countries and regions still set their own standards in areas like environmental protection, but these are more frequently becoming universally adopted to smooth the burden on business and allow companies to operate globally without undo interaction.

Global recognition of issues like climate change are bringing about new standards for all types of industrial action and product operations. For decades, discussion of automotive environmental impact centered around tailpipe emissions. With this issue somewhat under control, scientists, economists, politicians and activists have turned their attention to emissions from other automotive functions – like brake dust – which can pose a threat to public health.

HORIBA and the World of Brake Emission Testing

This realization has led to regulations governing such emissions and with regulations comes the need to test components and systems for compliance. One of the major firms offering such testing is HORIBA, Ltd. of Japan.

Headquartered in Kyoto, with offices in Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam, the 8,700-member organization manufactures and sells automotive emission measurement systems, environmental measuring instruments, wide range of scientific analyzers, and medical diagnostic analyzers, and measuring equipment used in the semi-conductor industry.

The BRAKE Report sent HORIBA a series of questions about the state of brake testing. Responses came from Greg Filer, Market Manager – Connected and Autonomous Vehicles and Brake Dust Measurements, HORIBA Canada Inc., and Stefan Güther, Global Product Manager Brake Test Systems, HORIBA Europe GmbH.

The BRAKE Report Magazine: What is the most requested area for brake testing today?
