Though not always in the spotlight, FRIMECO provides essential materials—such as metal fibers, metal sulfides, and cashew-derived additives—that all leading friction-material manufacturers rely on to produce brake pads and related products.
As the Vienna-based, family-owned company celebrates its 30th anniversary, The BRAKE Report decided to ask FRIMECO representatives a few questions about its history, business and the future.
What was the impetus behind the founding of FRIMECO in 1995?
FRIMECO was established in 1995 out of a clear market need and a forward-looking vision. At the time, the world was far less interconnected than it is today, and the concept of a one-stop shop tailored specifically to the friction industry simply didn’t exist. Recognizing this gap, FRIMECO set out to streamline sourcing for friction material manufacturers by offering a comprehensive range of high-quality raw materials under one roof.

From the beginning, FRIMECO’s product portfolio was designed to reflect this integrated approach. By including metal fibers, metal sulfides, and cashew-derived products, the company created a unique and versatile offering that addressed the diverse needs of its clients. This broad product mix not only set FRIMECO apart early on but also laid the foundation for its role as a reliable and innovative partner in the global friction materials supply chain.
What makes Austria the “right” location for the company? How were the other locations chosen?
Vienna is our home and serves as a natural base for FRIMECO. Located in the heart of Europe, Austria offers strategic access to both Western and Eastern markets, making it an ideal hub for international business. Just as importantly, customer service is deeply embedded in our DNA, and Austria’s strong infrastructure and business environment support our commitment to responsive, high-quality service.
Our presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina is rooted in a long-standing historical and cultural connection with Austria. Beyond shared ties, Bosnia offers tremendous potential: a skilled and motivated workforce, paired with competitive labor costs, has made it a valuable part of our operational network.
Meanwhile, our sales offices in Shanghai and New York place us directly in two of the world’s most important economic centers. These locations were chosen strategically to ensure we remain close to our global clients and responsive to the demands of rapidly evolving markets.

Where are your major markets?
FRIMECO’s major markets span the globe, reflecting the international nature of the automotive and friction-materials industries. We are active across Europe, Asia, and both North and South America—essentially, everywhere the automotive industry has a strong presence.
Our global reach ensures that we stay closely aligned with the needs and innovations of key manufacturing hubs. Whether serving long-established markets or emerging regions, our commitment remains the same: to deliver reliable, high-quality raw materials and outstanding customer support to friction material producers worldwide.
