EBC Brakes has introduced its Sintered SR Series brake pads, targeting closed-circuit racing and endurance applications. The pads use compressed, heat-fused metal powder alloys rather than traditional organic or carbon-based compounds. EBC manufactures the SR Series at its facility in Las Vegas.
Highlights
- Two friction compounds available: SR11 (medium friction) for street-based cars with ABS or rear race applications, and SR21 (ultra-high friction) for dedicated race cars with bias controls
- Sintered metal construction eliminates chemical bedding requirements, allowing immediate use after installation
- Operating range extends to 925°C (1,697°F) for the SR21 compound, with EBC claiming 3–5 times the wear life of competing semi-metallic pads
- Compatible with major race calipers from AP, Brembo, Alcon, and Wilwood
Sintered Metal Approach to Race Friction
The SR Series represents a departure from conventional organic and semi-metallic race pad formulations. EBC developed the pads using sintered metal powder alloys — a manufacturing process that compresses and heat-fuses metallic powders into a dense friction material.
According to EBC, the sintered construction delivers two primary advantages. First, the transfer film technology used in the compound is designed to minimize disc wear. Second, the hard compound offers firmer pedal feel and improved responsiveness compared to softer organic alternatives.
Two Compounds for Different Applications
The SR11 medium-friction compound is intended for the front axle of street-based race cars with high ABS intervention, or for the rear axle of dedicated race vehicles with adjustable brake bias. The SR21 ultra-high-friction compound targets the front and rear of full race cars equipped with bias controls.
EBC recommends pairing SR21 on the front axle with SR11 on the rear for balanced braking performance in race conditions.
No Bedding Required
A notable feature of the SR Series is the absence of a chemical bedding procedure. Traditional organic and semi-metallic pads require a controlled heat cycle to burn off volatile compounds before reaching optimal performance. Because the sintered formulation contains no volatiles, EBC states that the pads are functional immediately after matching them to the rotor surface.
The SR11 operates up to 900°C (1,650°F), while the SR21 handles temperatures up to 925°C (1,697°F).
Availability
The SR Series is available in select fitments for race calipers from AP, Brembo, Alcon, and Wilwood, as well as a limited range of high-performance street vehicle applications. Current inventory is stocked at EBC’s Las Vegas and UK headquarters. A live inventory sheet is available on the company’s website.
