Bendix Wins Ohio EPA Gold Award

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems has been awarded the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Encouraging Environmental Excellence (E3) Gold Award, marking the company’s highest recognition to date for its environmental stewardship and sustainability leadership. This prestigious award follows Bendix’s previous E3 Silver Awards in 2017 and 2020 and highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact through innovative waste diversion, energy conservation, and sustainable operational practices.

Key Highlights:

  • LEED Silver-Certified Headquarters: The Avon facility features energy-efficient lighting, daylight harvesting, and advanced HVAC controls.
  • Zero Waste to Landfill: 100% landfill diversion achieved through recycling, composting, and super recycling stations.
  • Energy Efficiency: Nearly 50% reduction in total energy consumption, with 100% of electricity use covered by Renewable Energy Certificates and carbon offsets.
  • Remanufacturing Leadership: Recovering up to 80% of original materials in components like valves and air compressors.
  • Stormwater and Biodiversity Management: On-site retention basins and habitat improvements support local ecosystems.
  • Employee Engagement: The Bendix Green Team drives initiatives like Earth Week celebrations and community garden projects.

The Ohio EPA selected Bendix for the E3 Gold Award in recognition of its comprehensive sustainability efforts, which go well beyond compliance with environmental regulations. As a subsidiary of Knorr-Bremse, Bendix aligns with the global commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero status by 2050. All Bendix North American manufacturing facilities, including the Avon campus, are ISO 14001:2015 certified, demonstrating a systematic approach to environmental management.

“Environmental stewardship has always been a core value at Bendix,” said Maria Gutierrez, Bendix senior director of environmental, social, and governance. “Earning E3 Gold reflects the measurable progress our teams have driven across Bendix operations. Our LEED Silver-certified headquarters in Avon has played a key role in advancing our sustainability strategy, and this award is a testament to how far we’ve come.”

The E3 Gold Award is the highest level of recognition in the Ohio EPA’s Encouraging Environmental Excellence program, which concluded in 2024. The program honored organizations that demonstrated leadership in resource conservation, pollution prevention, and green building practices.
