How much brake pad life is left on your fleet’s trailers right now? If you can’t answer that with confidence, you’re not alone — and SAF-Holland is betting its newest product can change that.
The company introduced BrakeSight at the 2026 TMC Annual Meeting in Nashville, a sensor-based monitoring system that tracks brake pad and rotor wear in real time on vehicles equipped with Haldex ModulT air disc brakes. The goal is straightforward: give maintenance managers actual wear data instead of forcing them to rely on fixed service intervals or post-failure inspections.
How It Works
BrakeSight integrates a sensor directly into the brake caliper’s adjustment mechanism. As pads and rotors wear down and the system compensates, the sensor measures that movement and converts it into a remaining-life percentage for each wheel end. That data flows through a frame-mounted electronic control unit to the fleet’s telematics platform via CAN bus.
The system is J1939-compliant and compatible with any telematics provider — SAF-Holland isn’t locking fleets into a proprietary ecosystem. The sensor housing is ultrasonically welded and sealed to IP6K9K standards, with a warranty of three years or 350,000 miles. It works across an operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C and applies to both tractor and trailer air disc brake applications.
Importantly, ModulT calipers already include mounting provisions for the sensor, meaning BrakeSight can be factory-installed or retrofitted to existing equipment.
Why It Matters
Predictive brake maintenance has been a talking point in the commercial vehicle space for years, but adoption has been uneven. Most fleets still service brakes reactively or on conservative time-based schedules — both of which carry cost penalties. Replacing pads too early wastes material and labor. Replacing them too late risks rotor damage and unplanned downtime that’s significantly more expensive.
BrakeSight positions SAF-Holland to compete more directly with the growing number of connected-vehicle maintenance platforms entering the commercial space. For fleets already running Haldex air disc brakes, this is an incremental investment with a clear ROI case.
It also raises an interesting question for the broader brake aftermarket: as real-time wear monitoring becomes standard on commercial vehicles, how will it reshape parts demand forecasting and distribution planning?
Other TMC Announcements
SAF-Holland also used TMC to unveil two additional products. The Holland SmartSTO relocates the fifth wheel air-release control to a cab-mounted button, eliminating the need for drivers to reach under the trailer during uncoupling. The system prevents disconnection until gladhands and electrical lines are fully stowed. It’s expected in Q4 2026.
The company also introduced the UltraLite40 slider for its ULX40 mechanical sliding suspension, designed for van and refrigerated trailers. SAF-Holland says the updated design is up to 30 pounds lighter and significantly more durable than the previous version, also arriving Q4.
Bottom Line
BrakeSight is a practical, retrofit-friendly step toward data-driven brake maintenance for commercial fleets. It won’t revolutionize the industry overnight, but for operations already running Haldex ModulT equipment, it removes a significant blind spot in their maintenance workflow.
