Knorr-Bremse and Cojali Introduce ESB REMAN ECU Repair Service

Knorr-Bremse and Cojali’s ESB REMAN service gives commercial vehicle ECUs a second life through advanced diagnostics, localized repair hubs, and circular economy practices that reduce waste and extend component longevity.

Knorr-Bremse and Cojali have launched ESB REMAN (ECU Simulation Bench Repair and Maintenance), a new electronic control unit (ECU) repair service for commercial vehicles. The initiative represents a significant step toward a comprehensive, circular aftermarket ecosystem, designed to extend component life, cut costs, and minimize waste.

Highlights

  • ESB REMAN enables efficient repair and reuse of commercial vehicle ECUs, reducing electronic waste.
  • Four European repair centers (Spain, France, Italy, Czech Republic) ensure localized, fast turnaround.
  • Jaltest ESB Simulation Bench technology powers diagnostics and testing.
  • Supports sustainability and circular economy objectives through remanufacturing.

Advancing the Commercial Vehicle Aftermarket

ESB REMAN reflects Knorr-Bremse and Cojali’s shared vision of a holistic, efficient, and sustainable aftermarket ecosystem. The service offers workshops a cost-effective alternative to full ECU replacement, reducing downtime while maintaining OEM-level reliability.

“With ESB REMAN, we are launching a service specifically designed for commercial vehicle ECUs,” said Alexander Wagner, Vice President Global Aftermarket/TruckServices, Knorr-Bremse Commercial Vehicles. “The solution delivers direct service and rapid repairs with consistent standards across our repair hubs. It’s both economical and eco-friendly.”

Technology and Process

Central to ESB REMAN is Cojali’s Jaltest ESB Simulation Bench, an advanced tool capable of simulating and testing ECU performance across multiple systems, including engine, brake, suspension, transmission, and emission controls.

“The Jaltest ESB system allows for in-depth diagnostics and testing of electronic control units,” explained Venancio Alberca, CEO of Cojali. “This technology underpins the ESB REMAN project and demonstrates our long-term commitment to environmental conservation and technical excellence.”

Each ECU undergoes a comprehensive process:

  1. Visual inspection and fault analysis using advanced diagnostics.
  2. Replacement of damaged components with new, certified parts.
  3. Functional testing to ensure restored performance equivalent to new units.

Driving Circular Economy and Sustainability

By reconditioning over 1,100 ECU references, ESB REMAN actively reduces electronic waste and supports the circular economy within the commercial vehicle sector. The localized repair model also lowers transportation-related emissions and enhances customer responsiveness.

Knorr-Bremse and Cojali’s partnership underscores their dedication to sustainable innovation and total lifecycle management—helping fleets, workshops, and distributors operate more efficiently while preserving environmental resources.
