Iveco Group Unveils Renovated Ulm Test Track

Iveco Group's renovated Ulm test track advances testing for next-generation vehicles, emphasizing sustainability through recycled materials and efficient designs, while complementing the modernized Turin facility for superior performance validation.

Iveco Group has officially opened its fully renovated and expanded test track in Ulm, Germany, marking a significant enhancement to its global testing infrastructure for commercial vehicles. This upgrade complements the recent modernization of the company’s proving ground in Turin, Italy, boosting capabilities for innovative mobility solutions.

Key Highlights

  • Ulm track spans 150,000 square meters with a new driving dynamics area and a 1.6-kilometer oval circuit.
  • Dedicated testing zones include tracks for braking, noise, and incline trials under realistic conditions.
  • Sustainability focus recycled asphalt and concrete, used local materials, and implemented emission-reducing construction methods.
  • Turin renewal covers 30,000 square meters with a 1.2-kilometer oval, acceleration/braking areas, and slopes up to 60%.
  • Iveco Group employs 36,000 people across 19 industrial sites and 30 R&D centers worldwide.

Ulm Test Track Enhancements

The Ulm facility, originally established in the late 1980s, now supports advanced testing for trucks, buses, and special-purpose vehicles. Key features include steep curves on the oval circuit and specialized areas for performance evaluation. The design accommodates emerging technologies, such as those in electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, ensuring readiness for future mobility demands.

Commitment to Sustainability

Environmental responsibility guided the renovation process. Large volumes of asphalt and concrete were recycled, while locally sourced gravel and stone reduced transportation emissions. On-site, advanced methods minimized pollution, complemented by optimized rainwater management and noise protection measures to lessen ecological impact.

Turin Proving Ground Modernization

The Ulm project aligns with the recent overhaul of the Turin test track, completed after eight months of work. Built in 1975, the site now boasts a refreshed road surface and enhanced safety systems. It features dedicated zones for acceleration, braking, and steep inclines ranging from 8% to 60%, vital for validating and homologating IVECO and IVECO BUS vehicles.

Iveco Group’s Global Presence

These investments underscore Iveco Group’s dedication to its industrial footprint, enabling delivery of cutting-edge, sustainable transport solutions. The company encompasses seven brands: IVECO for commercial vehicles; FPT Industrial for powertrain technologies; IVECO BUS and HEULIEZ for buses and coaches; IDV for defense equipment; ASTRA for heavy-duty vehicles; and IVECO CAPITAL for financing.
