Freightliner Adds Cross Traffic Assist, Left Turn Protection to ABA 6

Daimler Truck North America has added Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2 with left turn protection to the Detroit Assurance ABA 6 system on the Freightliner Cascadia.

Daimler Truck North America has expanded its Detroit Assurance Suite of Safety Systems with two new active safety features for the Freightliner Cascadia, aimed at reducing collisions at intersections and during turning maneuvers. Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2 with left turn protection will be available on Cascadias built beginning in 2027, building on the Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA 6) platform that is now standard on the truck. Daimler Truck announced the additions on April 23.

Highlights

  • Cross Traffic Assist uses radar to detect vehicles entering the truck’s forward path at intersections, with warnings and partial or full braking response
  • Active Side Guard Assist 2 extends Freightliner’s existing right-side pedestrian and cyclist protection to cover left turns against oncoming traffic
  • ABA 6 sensor stack includes four short-range radars, one long-range radar, and a multi-purpose camera, providing 270-degree monitoring around the tractor and a 53-foot trailer
  • Orders open in Q3 2026, with production starting January 2027

Cross Traffic Assist Targets Intersection Collisions

Intersections and turning maneuvers are among the most demanding scenarios for commercial vehicle safety systems because of limited sight lines and short reaction windows. Cross Traffic Assist addresses the forward-crossing case directly. Radar inputs monitor traffic moving across the truck’s intended path, and when the system identifies a potential collision, it issues visual and audible warnings. Within defined operating limits, the system can also apply partial or full braking to mitigate impact severity.

The feature is the first ABA 6 enhancement aimed specifically at lateral cross-path threats at intersections, an environment where forward-looking AEB systems alone provide limited coverage.

ASGA 2 Adds Left-Turn Coverage

Active Side Guard Assist on previous Detroit Assurance generations was limited to right-side detection of pedestrians and cyclists during low-speed turns. ASGA 2 extends that coverage to left turns. When the driver engages the left turn signal, the system monitors the intended path for oncoming traffic. If a hazard is detected, ASGA 2 can deliver visual and audible alerts and, in some scenarios, apply partial or full braking before the truck enters the conflict zone.

Left turns across opposing traffic remain a persistent crash category for heavy trucks because closing speeds and traffic patterns can shift rapidly during the maneuver. The addition addresses a coverage gap in earlier sideguard implementations.

ABA 6 Sensor Architecture

Detroit Assurance with ABA 6 is standard on all fifth-generation Freightliner Cascadia models. The system fuses four short-range radar units, one long-range radar, and a multi-purpose camera to provide 270-degree coverage around the tractor and up to a 53-foot trailer. ABA 6 is engineered to address an expanded set of scenarios, including visible vehicles in curves, vehicles in adjacent lanes, stationary offset vehicles common after roadway incidents, and moving or stationary pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Detroit Assurance suite also includes Active Lane Assist 2 (ALA 2). ALA 2 uses an electric motor integrated at the steering column to support lane centering and to correct lane swerving. The system also assists during cross winds, after blow-outs, and during low-speed maneuvering. Attentive Driver Protection, included with ALA 2, can bring the truck to a stop in its lane and activate hazard lights if the driver becomes unresponsive.

Executive Perspective

“Safety at Freightliner has consistently been shaped by customer needs, and by embracing a holistic, long-term perspective,” said Joanna Buttler, general manager, product strategy and market development, Daimler Truck North America. “Each enhancement to the Detroit Assurance Suite of Safety Systems reflects careful decisions about where added capability can make a meaningful difference for fleets and drivers. The latest ABA 6 features extend that approach, strengthening active safety while aligning with how commercial vehicle operation is expected to evolve over time.”

Driver Responsibility and Availability

Daimler Truck noted that all Detroit Assurance responses depend on attentive, professionally trained drivers and are influenced by operating conditions, sensor performance, and vehicle configuration. The features are designed to support driver judgment, not replace it.

Orders for Detroit Assurance with ABA 6 including Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2 are expected to open in the third quarter of 2026, with production beginning in January 2027. Additional information is available at demanddetroit.com/assurance/new-features.
