Bosch’s Innovative Brake Emissions Testing

Bosch pioneers test bench for brake particle emissions ahead of Euro 7 standards

Bosch is leading the charge in measuring brake particle emissions to comply with the upcoming Euro 7 standards, set to take effect in November 2026. Their state-of-the-art brake test bench measures total emissions and particle size distribution, surpassing European regulations. The tests aim to reduce harmful ultra-fine particles and improve the longevity and environmental impact of brake components.

Key Highlights:

  • Euro 7 standards enforce particle limits for brakes and tires by November 2026.
  • Bosch’s test bench exceeds Euro 7 requirements, measuring PM 10, PM 2.5, and PM 1 particles.
  • Investment of over one million Euros in developing the high-precision test system.
  • Tests aim to reduce ultra-fine particles, improving health and brake longevity.
  • Bosch’s Mobility Aftermarket division supports the aftermarket with advanced diagnostic tools and spare parts.
  • Bosch Group’s global network includes 429,000 associates and generates €91.6 billion in sales.

The new Euro 7 legislation on particle emissions from braking systems will take effect in November 2026, setting particle limits for non-exhaust emissions such as tires and braking systems for the first time. To comply with these standards, Bosch has developed a high-precision brake test bench capable of determining total emissions and particle size distribution throughout the test cycle.

Bosch’s test bench provides detailed information on the emissions behavior of braking systems, surpassing European test regulations. The Particle Measurement Programme – Global Technical Regulation 24 (PMP-GTR24) defines the specifications for measuring particle emissions. Bosch’s brake test rig, equipped with cutting-edge measurement technology, has been conducting particle emissions tests for braking systems since late 2022.

Dynamic Particle Measurement: Bosch’s brake test rig measures PM 10, PM 2.5, and ultra-fine PM 1 particles. The high-precision system can determine particle size distribution from ten nanometers to ten micrometers at any point during the test cycle. This advanced measurement technology allows Bosch engineers to understand emissions behavior in various driving situations, aiding in the development of low-emission brake components.

Bosch invested over one million Euros in designing and developing the upgraded test rig and special measurement technology. The goal is to meet future emissions limits and reduce ultra-fine particle emissions, which are particularly harmful to health and not yet included in Euro 7 regulations.

Test results will guide improvements to Bosch brake pads and discs, ultimately reducing particle emissions on the road. Research indicates that brake pads and discs with lower particle emissions also have significantly lower wear rates, potentially extending the time between replacements. This development aligns with Bosch’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Mobility Aftermarket Division: Bosch’s Mobility Aftermarket division provides modern diagnostic and repair shop equipment, along with a wide range of spare parts for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Their product portfolio includes Bosch original equipment, in-house developed products, and aftermarket-specific services. The division’s global logistics network ensures quick and timely delivery of spare parts to customers worldwide.

Bosch’s aftermarket services include testing and repair-shop technology, diagnostic software, service training, and information services. The division also oversees the “Bosch Service” repair-shop franchise and supports classic car owners through Bosch Classic.
