Astemo Americas Drives Automotive Future

Astemo Americas is undergoing significant changes, introducing new mobility technologies, expanding its North American footprint, and implementing brand updates. Part of the global Astemo Group, a major automotive supplier, the company is accelerating its investments in advanced mobility to solidify its leadership in an industry increasingly defined by software.

Key Highlights

  • Astemo is introducing next-generation technologies in autonomous driving, electrification, chassis, suspension, steering, and braking to its North American customers.
  • The company plans to expand its headquarters in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to support its growth.
  • Key innovations include an AI-based multi-camera system for AD/ADAS, an AI-powered full suspension system, and new “by-wire” steering and braking systems.
  • Formerly Hitachi Astemo Americas, the company has officially been renamed Astemo Americas to align with its global parent company.

Investing in Advanced Mobility

Astemo is strategically positioning itself as a leader in electrification and mobility intelligence. The company is increasing its investment in key areas such as electrification, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving, and advanced chassis technology. This summer, Astemo is showcasing a wide range of these new mobility solutions to its major OEM customers across the Americas through a series of presentations, displays, and vehicle test drives. In line with this growth, the company has also announced plans to move its Farmington Hills, Michigan, technical center and headquarters to a new, larger location in the near future.

Technological Innovations

Astemo is previewing several cutting-edge systems for automakers that are designed for future vehicle models.

  • AD/ADAS: The company has developed automated driving solutions that use a multi-camera system with proprietary AI-based stereo vision. This technology generates a 360∘ point cloud that is denser than conventional LiDAR, and also includes color and brightness information.
  • Suspension: A new full suspension system utilizes AI-powered control logic and deep-learning algorithms to improve ride and handling at a lower cost than comparable systems. Equipped with a “preview” camera, the system can anticipate and prepare for bumps and potholes in the road.
  • Steering: Astemo’s latest steer-by-wire technology replaces the traditional steering wheel with a handheld device, a key step toward autonomous driving.
  • Brake: Making its North American debut, the “Smart Brake” is an electro-mechanical brake-by-wire system that reduces the lag time between driver input and brake response. By eliminating the traditional hydraulic connection, the system simplifies vehicle assembly, helps extend battery range, and reduces maintenance by removing the need for brake fluid.

Corporate and Brand Evolution

Reflecting a change at its corporate headquarters, the company, formerly known as Hitachi Astemo Americas, has officially changed its name to Astemo Americas. The name Astemo is derived from “Advanced Sustainable Technologies for Mobility,” highlighting the company’s commitment to developing cutting-edge and sustainable solutions. This change is accompanied by the new branding message, “Astemo, Mobility Beyond – From the Core of Mobility, Freedom.”

Astemo, a joint venture between Hitachi, Ltd., Honda Motor Co., and JIC Capital, Ltd., employs 80,000 people worldwide, with over 14,000 in the Americas.
