Volvo Trucks Recalls 222 VNL Units Over Brake Release Timing

Volvo Trucks is recalling 222 VNL heavy trucks over brake release timing that exceeds federal FMVSS 121 requirements, with a fix involving additional pneumatic plumbing components.

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling 222 model year 2025–2026 VNL (4) heavy trucks after internal testing revealed the vehicles fail to meet federal air brake release timing standards. The recall, filed with NHTSA on April 1, 2026, under campaign number 26V186, addresses a noncompliance with FMVSS 121 that could increase crash risk.

Highlights

  • 222 Volvo VNL (4) trucks built between May 28, 2024, and December 11, 2025, are affected by the recall.
  • Brake release timing measured at 0.61 seconds, exceeding the FMVSS 121 maximum of 0.55 seconds.
  • Remedy involves installing an additional brake valve and fittings to improve pneumatic airflow; owner notifications are expected by May 24, 2026.
  • No crashes, injuries, or field complaints have been reported in connection with the defect.

Defect Details

The recalled vehicles were built with a specific configuration of Gras suspension, two rear driven axles, 24-square-inch rear service and emergency brake chambers, and traction control. According to the Part 573 filing, this pneumatic plumbing combination does not achieve the required airflow to release brakes within the federally mandated timeframe.

Testing showed brake release times of 0.61 seconds — roughly 11% slower than the 0.55-second maximum specified under FMVSS 121, Section S5.3.4. While the noncompliance may increase crash risk, Volvo Trucks noted the condition is not noticeable to the driver during normal operation.

The affected component is the modulator, identified under part number 24710101.

Investigation Timeline

Volvo Trucks identified the potential noncompliance during internal testing on December 11, 2025. The company’s Safety Office opened a product safety investigation one week later. After two rounds of review by the Product Safety Evaluation Committee and the Product Safety Committee, a formal recall decision was made on March 18, 2026.

The specific vehicle configuration involved was eliminated from production on December 11, 2025. Vehicles currently in production no longer include this combination.

Remedy and Owner Notification

Dealers will install an additional brake valve and fittings to the service brake pneumatic plumbing at no cost. The updated plumbing adds airflow paths to allow faster pressure release. Volvo Trucks has issued a consumer advisory of “Do Not Drive” and “Park Outside” for affected units.

Dealer notifications were scheduled for April 1, 2026. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed between May 22 and May 24, 2026, as part of a phased recall. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 800-528-6586 and reference manufacturer recall number RVXX2602.
