TMD Friction’s ESG report demonstrates the company’s strides toward sustainable business practices. Between 2021 and 2023, the company reduced landfill waste by 41%, surpassing its initial target of 20%. The same period saw a 46% reduction in Lost Time Accidents (LTA) and a 61% decrease in lost work hours due to accidents. To support employee well-being, an Employee Assistance Programme was rolled out globally.
The report also details energy efficiency efforts. Between 2021 and 2023, global energy consumption fell by 17%. In 2023, TMD Friction partnered with Iberdrola to increase the share of renewable electricity in its operations, targeting 100% renewable energy by 2030. The installation of 1,101 solar panels at its Valencia plant covered 15% of the factory’s energy needs last year, contributing significantly to increased renewable energy use across the company’s global operations.
As a leading brake friction manufacturer, TMD Friction has a long history of sustainability efforts, including launching copper-free brake pads for high-performance vehicles and lightweight brake pads for commercial vehicles in the aftermarket. The company played a crucial role in the development of the Euro 7 emissions standard and is actively working on solutions to reduce brake dust emissions. The introduction of the Eco-Table, an environmental classification standard for friction materials, highlights the company’s leadership in setting industry standards.
The company’s local offices also engage in community outreach, collaborating with schools, participating in litter clean-up events, and donating to charities worldwide. “Although our sustainability journey did not start with the report, the report does represent a significant step forward,” says Lynn Edwards, Vice President of HSE and Sustainability at TMD Friction.
Included in the ESG Report is TMD Friction’s Sustainability Roadmap 2040, which lays out specific, measurable sustainability objectives. Goals include achieving 100% recyclable packaging by 2040 and completely eliminating copper from all new product developments by 2025. “At TMD Friction, we always try to go above and beyond the minimum requirements and exceed expectations with our products, so we wanted our sustainability strategy to do exactly the same,” says Lynn Edwards.
