MINI says all current models in its lineup carry five-star Euro NCAP ratings, with the third-generation Countryman scoring 83% for adult occupant protection and 79% for safety assist in its 2024 assessment. The Munich-based BMW Group brand outlined the standard active and passive safety package in a May 11 statement, which covers up to twelve ultrasonic sensors, five cameras, five radar units, and as many as nine airbags depending on market specification. The company said the integrated approach combines pre-crash intervention with reinforced body structure to deliver protection across the model range as standard equipment.
Highlights
- All current MINI models — Cooper, Countryman, and Aceman — hold five-star Euro NCAP ratings, with the MINI Cooper Electric earning Best in Class for 2025 at 89% adult occupant protection.
- Sensor suite includes up to twelve ultrasonic sensors, five cameras, and five radar units feeding active safety functions including Front Collision Warning with automatic braking and Lane Departure Warning.
- The Countryman ships in Germany with seven airbags standard, including a center airbag between the front seats; Cooper Electric and Aceman add two second-row side airbags.
- Pre-Crash systems automatically close windows and sliding roofs and reposition seat backrests when sensors detect an imminent collision.

Active Safety Standard on Every Model
MINI fits a comprehensive active safety package as standard across the lineup. The package includes Lane Departure Warning with active steering intervention, Front Collision Warning with automatic braking that operates during turning maneuvers and at complex junctions, continuous speed limit information, and cruise control with braking function.
All MINI variants also include the Driving Assistant, which adds Lane Change Warning with blind-spot collision alerts, Exit Warning, Rear Collision Warning for approaching vehicles, and Rear Cross Traffic Warning to support reversing out of parking spaces.
For Cooper, Aceman, and Countryman buyers, the optional Driving Assistant Plus enables partially automated driving with Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, and an automatic Speed Limit Assistant. The Countryman alone offers Driving Assistant Professional, adding Lane Change Assistant, Active Lane Guiding tied to route guidance, side collision protection on motorways, and traffic light recognition for urban driving.
Pre-Crash Activation Before Impact
The Pre-Crash function uses driving dynamics data, sensor input, and environmental information to detect imminent collisions and trigger reversible protective measures. According to the company, the system automatically closes windows and sliding roofs and adjusts seat backrest position when sensors flag a critical situation. The intent is to optimize occupant position and restraint geometry before airbag deployment.

Body Structure, Airbags, and Belt Systems
On the passive side, MINI cites a rigid body structure with defined crumple zones as the foundation. Airbag count varies by market and model, reaching as many as nine adaptive front and side units. The MINI Countryman sold in Germany ships with seven airbags as standard, including a center airbag between the driver and front passenger that addresses occupant-to-occupant injury risk in side impacts. The Cooper family and the all-electric Aceman add two side airbags in the second row.
Seat belt systems combine adaptive force limiters with automatic tensioners. The all-electric Cooper models and the Aceman use buckle-mounted belt tensioners that target pelvic-area restraint. Seat Belt Reminders are active on all seats as standard, and second-row positions include force limiters and tensioners. An active bonnet is fitted on almost all MINI models, raising during a pedestrian impact to create deformation space ahead of hard underhood components.
Euro NCAP Context
Euro NCAP awarded the 2024 MINI Countryman five stars with category scores of 83% adult occupant protection, 87% child occupant, 81% vulnerable road users, and 79% safety assist, according to the agency’s published 2024 results. The MINI Cooper Electric followed in 2025, taking Euro NCAP Best in Class with 89% adult occupant protection, 87% child occupant, 77% pedestrian, and 79% safety assist. The Aceman also carried the five-star rating across its variants in 2025.
The 2024 Countryman test was conducted under the protocol introduced in 2020, which uses a mobile progressive deformable barrier in the frontal crash rather than the static block used in earlier years. Euro NCAP also expanded its safety assist evaluation, raising the bar that vehicles must clear for a five-star result. Beginning in 2026, Euro NCAP has restructured its assessment into a four-stage framework covering safe driving, crash avoidance, crash protection, and post-crash safety, with new emphasis on driver state monitoring and post-crash rescue. Future MINI assessments will be measured against that revised protocol.
The release is manufacturer-issued and does not include independent verification of the active and passive safety claims beyond the cited Euro NCAP ratings.
