Mercedes-Benz revolutionized automotive safety 30 years ago with the introduction of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®). Debuting in 1995 with the S-Class Coupé of the 140 model series, ESP® was a groundbreaking innovation that significantly enhanced vehicle stability and control, particularly in challenging road conditions. This milestone in active safety has since become a standard feature across most vehicles, preventing countless accidents by intervening to prevent skidding and loss of control.

Key Highlights:

  • Debut in 1995: The ESP® system was first showcased in the S-Class Coupé in northern Sweden, demonstrating its ability to maintain stability on snow-covered roads.
  • Collaborative Development: Mercedes-Benz partnered with Bosch to develop ESP®, marking a milestone in automotive engineering.
  • Breakthrough in 1998: The technology became standard in the revised A-Class following the “elk test,” inspiring widespread adoption across the industry.
  • Impact on Safety: ESP® has become a crucial feature in modern vehicles, operating silently to prevent skidding and defuse dangerous driving situations.

In February 1995, the world witnessed the debut of ESP® in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupés of the 140 model series. Demonstrations on snow-covered roads in northern Sweden highlighted the system’s revolutionary ability to keep a vehicle stable under challenging conditions. While a luxury coupé without ESP® swerved uncontrollably, its counterpart equipped with the system maintained precise stability, showcasing the transformative potential of this innovation.

The technology was jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and Bosch, combining expertise to introduce a groundbreaking safety feature. In 1998, ESP® became a standard offering in the revised A-Class, following the infamous “elk test.” This integration signaled a new era for active safety, influencing nearly all automakers to incorporate similar systems into their vehicles.

Three decades later, ESP® remains a cornerstone of vehicle safety, working silently to mitigate risks and enhance control. By selectively braking individual wheels to counteract skidding, the system has contributed significantly to accident prevention, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz’s legacy of pioneering safety innovations.
