McLaren Automotive has issued a recall for select vehicles due to a potential safety issue involving incorrectly routed brake lines. This defect could lead to the brakes activating on the wrong side, causing one of the rear wheels to lock up and increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects certain 2020-2025 models, including the 600LT, 720S, Artura, GT, and GTS.
Key Highlights
- Recall Reason: Incorrectly routed brake lines may cause rear wheel lock-up.
- Affected Models: 2020-2025 McLaren 600LT, 720S, Artura, GT, GTS.
- Potential Risk: Increased risk of losing control and crashing.
- Remedy: Free inspection and correction of brake line connections.
- Contact Information: McLaren customer service at 1-646-429-8916 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.
The defect stems from the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability programme (ESP) not functioning correctly because the brake pipes are connected improperly into the control module. Specifically, the rear right and rear left brake pipes might brake the opposite wheel, potentially causing a rear wheel to lock up.
This issue poses a significant safety risk, particularly when driving at high speeds or near the limit of traction. If the ABS/ESP system activates to stabilize the vehicle, the incorrect brake application could lead to a wheel locking, causing the driver to lose control.
McLaren identified the problem in March 2025 after a racetrack incident where a driver lost control due to an unusual wheel lock-up. No injuries or damage occurred, but an investigation revealed the brake pipe misrouting. Reviewing production records, McLaren found 80 vehicles had failed an ESP test during a rolling road quality check without a confirmed retest. Out of caution, 29 units are now recalled.
Dealers will inspect and correct the brake line connections at no cost to owners. McLaren addressed the issue in production with a process change in March 2025. Owners can reach McLaren customer service at 1-646-429-8916 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9171). Additional details are available at www.nhtsa.gov.
