Endurance Technologies Ltd will bring its expanded anti-lock braking system capacity on stream by September 2026, adding 1.2 million ABS units per year to a current installed base of 640,000 units. The Indian component maker is investing ahead of finalized regulations that would extend ABS requirements to lower-capacity two-wheelers, taking total annual ABS capacity to 1.84 million units. Managing Director Anurang Jain disclosed the timeline during an analyst call covered by Autocar Professional.
Highlights
- ABS capacity expansion adds 1.2 million units per year, lifting total installed capacity to 1.84 million units
- Dual-channel ABS production for Bajaj Auto starts June 2026 with annual sales potential of 120,000 units
- New Chennai disc brake plant will have annual capacity of 3 million disc brake assemblies and 4 million brake discs
- EV battery pack supplies from the Pune-area facility begin in the final week of May 2026
Regulatory Push Drives Expansion
India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways published draft amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, proposing that all two-wheelers manufactured on or after January 1, 2026, carry ABS. ABS is currently mandatory for higher-capacity two-wheelers in India, while many lower-capacity models rely on combined braking systems.
“As you are aware, a draft guideline was issued by the government in June 2025 to extend ABS requirements to lower-engine-capacity vehicles. In line with this guideline, we had announced expansion of our ABS capacity,” Jain said.
Endurance is proceeding with the project before final regulations are notified, anticipating structural growth in demand for two-wheeler safety features. India’s 2018 mandate for ABS on higher-capacity motorcycles is part of a broader regulatory trend across major two-wheeler markets, with several jurisdictions now extending ABS requirements to smaller-displacement bikes.
Dual-Channel ABS and Higher-Value Programs
Production of dual-channel ABS for Bajaj Auto begins in June 2026 with annual sales potential of 120,000 units, Jain said. A second program of similar volume is scheduled for the second quarter of FY27.
Endurance is also adding traction control for select premium motorcycle applications, primarily in the 160cc–250cc segment, aligning with evolving OEM specifications.
Localization within the braking business is increasing as well. The company has begun in-house production of electronic control units for single-channel ABS, with dual-channel ECU production starting alongside the dual-channel ABS program in June 2026.
“This will help strengthen the value-add in the ABS braking business,” Jain said.
Jain added that an industry shift toward hydraulic combined braking systems in some categories would expand the addressable market for Endurance’s hydraulic braking products, including master cylinders, calipers, and brake discs.
Chennai Brake Plant Nearing Operations
The ABS expansion forms part of a wider push across braking systems. Endurance’s new Chennai site for disc brake assemblies is in advanced civil construction, positioned closer to south-India OEM customers to reduce freight costs. Supplies to Royal Enfield begin in July 2026, with deliveries to other OEMs starting in the third quarter of FY27.
The Chennai facility will have annual capacity of 3 million disc brake assemblies and 4 million brake discs, part of a planned total of 7.6 million disc brake assemblies and 8.6 million brake discs across Endurance’s operations.
The company’s integrated R&D facility for brakes at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is now fully operational, supporting two-wheeler brake and ABS work alongside in-house testing and validation for four-wheeler brake assemblies. The expansion follows a similar pattern to other Indian braking suppliers scaling up domestic capacity to meet rising safety-content requirements.
EV Battery Pack Supplies Begin
Endurance is also preparing to begin EV battery pack supplies from its facility near Pune. Jain said the battery pack manufacturing program entered final validation during Q4 FY26, with regulatory compliance testing completed at the certification agency and customer-review improvement points addressed.
“Going forward, with regulatory approvals and customer validations nearing completion, we are planning to start the SOP in week four of this month,” Jain said.
The first battery pack product targets a two-wheeler EV application, though Endurance intends to pursue opportunities across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and other segments using the same capability.
