Hyundai Avante Adds P-Button Emergency Braking System

Hyundai's eighth-generation Avante debuts a shift-by-wire P-button emergency braking function that applies hydraulic braking at all four wheels and engages the electronic parking brake below 0.6 mph, plus extended regenerative braking.

Hyundai Motor has equipped the eighth-generation Avante with a shift-by-wire emergency braking function that limits acceleration, applies hydraulic braking at all four wheels, and engages the electronic parking brake once the vehicle slows below 0.6 mph (1 km/h). The system is triggered by pressing and holding the P button on the column-mounted electronic shift lever, giving drivers a way to stop the car when the brake pedal cannot be used normally. Hyundai detailed the system this week at The All-New Avante Tech Day in Seoul’s Seocho-gu district, where engineers walked through the compact sedan’s safety, powertrain, and efficiency development. It is the first Hyundai Motor Group model to carry the function.

How Does the P-Button Emergency Braking Work?

The function activates when the driver presses the P button while the vehicle is in motion. For as long as the button is held, the car limits acceleration on its own and applies hydraulic braking to all four wheels. Deceleration continues until the vehicle drops below 0.6 mph (1 km/h), at which point the electronic parking brake takes over to hold it stationary.

Braking force is modulated by vehicle speed rather than applied at a fixed rate, and the system disengages the moment the driver releases the button. That release behavior keeps the function under continuous driver authority rather than committing the vehicle to a stop once triggered.

A Second Layer Against Pedal Confusion

Hyundai also fitted the Avante with a system that intervenes when the accelerator is stomped in place of the brake. The vehicle recognizes the input as a misapplication and brings itself to a stop. The feature debuted on the Casper Electric and now pairs with the P-button function as what Hyundai describes as a double safety device, with the company stating the Avante was developed with safety as its top priority.

Pedal misapplication has moved onto regulators’ radar in parallel: Euro NCAP’s 2026 protocols award credit under Low Speed Collisions testing to vehicles that can recognize and mitigate these events, making the countermeasure a scored item rather than a marketing line.

Regenerative Braking Extended Closer to Standstill

Efficiency gains on the hybrid came partly from widening the regenerative braking window. Hyundai increased the share of braking handled regeneratively rather than hydraulically, carrying it down to just before the vehicle stops below 6 mph (10 km/h). A full stop still requires the brake pedal.

Hyundai says braking stability and ride comfort were improved despite the larger regenerative share — the blend transition being the usual point where extended regeneration degrades pedal feel. The company attributes an efficiency improvement of about 10% over the previous 45.2 mpg (19.2 km/L) to the change.

Hybrid Hardware and Body Reinforcement

The Avante uses a parallel-architecture 1.6-liter hybrid system shared in structure with the Kia Niro and Seltos, but with an added drive motor and high-voltage battery. The motor is rated at 45 kW and 150 lb-ft (203 Nm), paired with a 1.49 kWh, 270-volt battery.

On the body, Hyundai applied ultra-high-strength steel to key structural areas and thickened the inner and outer B-pillar panels for crash performance. Overall length grew 2.2 inches (55 mm), with width and wheelbase each up 1.2 inches (30 mm).

The Avante is also the first Hyundai to receive navigation-based Smart Cruise Control 2, extending a highway-only function to regular roads — a feature not offered on the newly unveiled Grandeur.

What Remains Unsettled

Pricing has not been announced. Hyundai plans to release trim details, official fuel efficiency ratings, and pricing during the third quarter, with the sedan due for official release in Korea next month. Industry observers quoted at the event expect the added content to push prices up, and view how far that increase is contained as central to the model’s commercial performance.
