Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for certain 2023-2024 F-250, F-350, and F-450 trucks due to issues with the rearview camera system. Water may enter the Tailgate Park Assist Sensor Interface Module (TPASIM), causing the rearview camera image to display inconsistently or appear blue or black, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.
Key Highlights:
- Affected Vehicles: 2023-2024 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450
- Number of Units Affected: Approximately 24,950 vehicles
- Problem: Water may infiltrate the Tailgate Park Assist Sensor Interface Module, leading to a malfunctioning rearview camera display.
- Remedy: Replacement of the tailgate top camera, wire harness, TPASIM module, and software update.
- Owner Notification: Letters expected to be mailed starting December 9, 2024.
Ford will replace affected components free of charge, including the tailgate top camera, wire harness, and TPASIM module. Additionally, the Image Processing Module A (IPMA) software will be updated as part of the recall. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail, with the mailing process beginning on December 9, 2024. Ford’s recall number for this issue is 24S66.
Owners are encouraged to contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for further information or to determine if their vehicle is included in the recall. Alternatively, vehicle owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for additional assistance.
This recall affects 24,950 units, with approximately 5% estimated to be impacted by the defect. The water ingress issue is related to the dimensions of certain mating interfaces of the tailgate top camera system, which were found to be out of tolerance. This defect results in water retention in the camera bracket, especially when oriented in the top tailgate application, causing inconsistent camera performance.
The vehicles affected include both 2023 and 2024 model year Ford Super Duty trucks. Specifically, 8,808 units of the 2023 models and 16,142 units of the 2024 models are impacted. The recall applies to vehicles produced between October 4, 2022, and March 14, 2024.
The potential safety risk involves an intermittent or complete loss of the rearview camera image while the vehicle is in reverse, which could lead to an increased risk of collision. Drivers may notice a blue or black screen or a message indicating that “Reverse Brake Assist Unavailable.” Owners who have already incurred expenses for repairing this issue may be eligible for reimbursement under Ford’s recall reimbursement plan on file with the NHTSA.
For more information, affected owners can also visit their local Ford or Lincoln dealer or refer to Ford’s On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) to confirm if their vehicle is part of this recall.
