Brembo and Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems have formed a joint venture to produce motorcycle anti-lock braking systems (ABS) for the Indian market, with Brembo taking a 60% majority stake in the new company, BRSF Active Safety Solutions. The venture will handle local assembly and supply of motorcycle ABS from a dedicated, automated plant in Chakan, near Pune — one of India’s main motorcycle manufacturing hubs and the site of Brembo‘s existing India operations. The partnership pairs Brembo’s foundation-brake portfolio, sold under its BYBRE brand, with Ningbo SAFE’s ABS engineering, and is positioned to supply original equipment customers as India’s two-wheeler safety standards evolve.
Highlights
- Brembo will hold a 60% majority stake in the joint venture, named BRSF Active Safety Solutions.
- The venture will produce motorcycle ABS at a dedicated, automated plant in Chakan (Pune), expected to employ around 50 people with a progressive ramp-up.
- It will offer both single-channel and dual-channel ABS to original equipment customers under Brembo’s BYBRE brand.
- India is the world’s largest two-wheeler market, with up to 25 million registered vehicles.
Inside the Joint Venture
The new company will concentrate on the local assembly and supply of ABS for motorcycles sold in India. Its manufacturing site in Chakan sits next to the existing Brembo India plant, and the project calls for automated assembly lines with a workforce of roughly 50 that scales as production volumes and supply-chain localization increase. The closing remains subject to customary regulatory approvals.
“The joint venture with Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems reflects our commitment to supporting the progressive evolution of motorcycle safety standards in India,” said Andrea Paganessi, Motorcycle GBU Chief Operating Officer of Brembo. “Leveraging our long-standing experience in the Indian market and by investing in local production and industrial capabilities, we aim to accompany the market’s transition toward more advanced braking solutions.”
Single- and Dual-Channel ABS Under the BYBRE Brand
The venture will supply both dual-channel and single-channel ABS, intended to cover the range of requirements across the Indian market, with the option to add more advanced products later. Brembo frames the tie-up as strengthening its position in foundation brake solutions for motorcycles under the BYBRE brand, supplying advanced braking systems to original equipment customers.
“Within this joint venture, our role is to translate this shared vision into an efficient and localized industrial operation. Together with Brembo, we are establishing a manufacturing platform focused on quality, reliability and the specific requirements of the Indian motorcycle market,” said Hill Shan, Founder of Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems.
Targeting the World’s Largest Two-Wheeler Market
India represents the largest two-wheeler market globally, with up to 25 million registered vehicles and continued expansion. Both partners describe the venture as reinforcing their commitment to industrial development in India through technology transfer, operational efficiency, and progressive localization of the supply chain — positioning aligned with wider motorcycle ABS adoption across the region’s safety-driven two-wheeler segment.
About the Partners
Brembo has operated in India since 2008, producing braking systems and components for small- and medium-displacement motorcycles under the BYBRE brand. Its India business runs two plants, in Pune and Chennai, and employs about 1,250 people. Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems, established in December 2014, develops and manufactures ABS for two-wheelers and exports to Europe; the company says it has led China’s two-wheeler ABS market by share each year from 2019 to 2025.
