Tesla Plaid S with Carbon Brakes Impresses Tester

AUSTIN, Texas – Tesla has offered a $20,000 carbon-ceramic brake option for its high-performance Model S Plaid sedan and a test of the system was recently posted on YouTube by Sebastian Vittel.

Vittel — not to be confused with former Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel — had an opportunity to sample one of these vehicles on Circuit de Bresse racetrack in France with a in-car camera recording the experience.

In addition to the video, he posted the following remarks:

had the honor (thanks to Tesla Belgium!!) of trying the absolute first TESLA MODEL S PLAID with the 20K€ factory CARBON CERAMIC BRAKE KIT!!!!

And let me tell you guy, this is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL compared to the stock car!!

First the top speed is unrestricted with that kit and i reached a couple of times….350KM/H yes 350 (speedo) which is somewhere in between 320/330km/h GPS on autobahn test (video will be shared soon)

Second i had the chance to bring the car for one full day on CIRCUIT de BRESSE in France for a real condition test, that is a technical small track which is normally great for small car like Caterham, Ariel Atom or other Lotus car and a TRUE NIGHTMARE for heavy cars and the brakes!!!

Well after couple of laps i just did the track record for a street legal car on non-semi slick tire here :-))) Tire Original Michelin PS4S on original dimension 265/35/21 front   295/30/21 rear and original TESLA WHEELS

the laptime (in this video): 1min33.610 is absolutely insane for this kind of big car who is totally not adapted for this track!!

For give you an idea, i did here 1min31.70 with the gt2 rs MR on used cup 2 R and more interestingly 1min37.40 with the cayman 718 gts MR with also Michelin PS4S.

This car with proper brakes is an absolute beast, i cannot believe, it has been that fast here, it is unbelievable.

Nurburgring test of the car later this year should reserve some surprise….

Tesla’s website posts the following details on the kit:

Designed for the ultimate track experience, the Model S Plaid Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit is a complete hardware package that delivers maximum, repeatable stopping power during high-performance driving.

Our rotors feature continuous-fiber technology and are constructed in a unique 3D matrix to add strength and manage heat more effectively. For additional durability, a ceramic friction layer covers the entire rotor surface to reduce brake dust, corrosion and wear, while also improving pedal feel for daily driving.

The kit includes all-new carbon-silicon carbide rotors, one-piece forged calipers with high-performance pads and high-temperature brake fluid.

Includes:

2x 410 x 40mm carbon-silicon carbide front rotors
2x 410 x 32mm carbon-silicon carbide rear rotors
2x 6-piston one-piece, forged front calipers
2x 4-piston one-piece, forged rear calipers
2x integrated, caliper-mounted parking brakes
4x high-performance front brake pads
4x high-performance rear brake pads
1x bottle of high-temperature brake fluid

Note: This package is only compatible with Model S Plaid vehicles equipped with 21” Arachnid wheels. Purchase price includes installation via Tesla Service.

And after he made the run, he opined the Plaid S with optional brake package might be capable of 370km/hr (230 miles per hour)!
