Rivian Automotive is recalling 7,873 of its 2022 R1T and R1S vehicles due to a potential accelerator pedal issue that could prevent the “auto-hold” or “park” features from activating as intended. This increases the risk of unintended vehicle movement and potential crashes.
The Problem:
- The accelerator pedal in affected vehicles may not detect when the driver releases it, leading to:
- Auto-hold: The vehicle might not automatically hold itself stationary when stopped, requiring the driver to manually apply the brake.
- Park: The vehicle might not automatically engage the parking brake when shifted into park.
The Cause:
- An out-of-specification accelerator pedal with a nonconforming chip can drift outside its normal range, especially in high cabin temperatures. This can trick the system into thinking the driver is still pressing the pedal.
The Risk:
- If auto-hold or park don’t activate, the vehicle could roll forward unexpectedly, increasing the risk of accidents.
The Fix:
- Rivian has released a free over-the-air (OTA) software update that addresses the issue.
- All affected vehicles will also receive a free replacement accelerator pedal.
- Owner notification letters will be mailed February 16, 2024.
- Rivian customer service can be reached at 1-888-748-4261.
What to Do:
- If you own a 2022 Rivian R1T or R1S built between June 10, 2021, and October 31, 2022, contact Rivian to confirm if your vehicle is affected.
- Download and install the latest OTA software update as soon as it becomes available.
- Schedule an appointment with Rivian for a free accelerator pedal replacement.
