Pro-Cut X1 HD Lathe Cuts Fleet Brake Costs

Pro-Cut's X1 HD On-Truck Brake Lathe targets fleet operators with on-vehicle rotor resurfacing, cutting heavy-duty brake service time and replacement costs.

Pro-Cut International has positioned its X1 HD On-Truck Brake Lathe as a cost-reduction tool for fleet operators and heavy-duty service providers. The system machines rotors in place rather than requiring full replacement, a process the company says can reduce vehicle downtime from days to hours.

Highlights

  • The X1 HD resurfaces heavy-duty rotors on the vehicle in approximately 30 minutes, eliminating the need for costly rotor replacement.
  • A 48V DC variable speed motor and low-range gearbox deliver the torque required to turn large vehicle axles.
  • Adjustable tool arms and a 190 mm feed screw accommodate the largest rotors in the heavy-duty segment.
  • Pro-Cut claims the lathe can pay for itself in a single brake job on certain heavy-duty vehicles.

Repair vs. Replace Economics

Heavy-duty vehicles often use multiple brake systems. New rotors can cost hundreds of dollars each. Replacing a single disc can take up to six hours, according to Jeff Hastings, president of Pro-Cut.

“Heavy duty vehicles can have multiple brake systems and new rotors can cost hundreds of dollars each and take hours to replace,” Hastings said. “Installing new rotors on heavy duty vehicles is hard work, time consuming and expensive. The X1 brake lathe machines the rotor in about 30 minutes, saving the cost of a replacement rotor and hours of vehicle downtime.”

The on-truck design eliminates the need to remove rotors from the hub. This reduces both labor hours and total service time per vehicle.

Technical Specifications

The X1 HD features several design elements aimed at heavy-duty applications:

  • Power system: 48V DC variable speed motor capable of turning large vehicle axles
  • Gearbox: Low-range gearbox providing high torque output
  • Tool arms: Adjustable arms with a 190 mm feed screw for oversized rotors
  • Controls: Separate speed and feed controls for precision machining

Labor and Downtime Savings

Hastings emphasized the labor efficiency gains for fleet operations and independent service providers.

“For some vehicles, replacing one disc can be a six-hour operation. By repairing rather than replacing these specific rotors, the Pro-Cut X1 can pay for itself in one brake job,” he said. “Since the Pro-Cut X1 is an on-truck brake lathe, fleets and service providers will also realize significant labor time savings since replacing even one disc can be time consuming and labor intensive. With the X1, rotors can be resurfaced quickly and efficiently, reducing total vehicle downtime from days to hours.”

Pro-Cut International is based in West Lebanon, New Hampshire, and operates as a brand under Snap-on Incorporated. More information is available at www.procutusa.com.
