Why Nissan Stood Out in Testing
Judges noted that while driver-assistance features have become more common industry-wide, Nissan distinguished itself through standard availability and ease of use. According to Parents, the automaker’s safety and assist features work without unnecessary complexity. As a result, families gain protection as soon as they start driving.
The award specifically recognized two technology suites: ProPILOT Assist and Safety Shield® 360. Both systems are designed to operate intuitively with minimal driver input required for activation.
ProPILOT Assist and ProPILOT Assist 2.1
ProPILOT Assist uses single-button activation and clear dashboard indicators to support highway driving. The system manages speed, lane centering, and steering support. Its operation is designed to reduce complexity for everyday commuting.
Meanwhile, ProPILOT Assist 2.1 represents Nissan’s most advanced driver-assistance offering. This system allows attentive drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel during single-lane freeway operation. It handles acceleration, steering, and braking on more than 200,000 miles of compatible highways. However, the system requires a NissanConnect Services subscription after an initial trial period.
Safety Shield® 360 Technology Suite
Safety Shield® 360 delivers six standard features across the Nissan lineup:
- Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
- Rear Automatic Braking
- Blind Spot Warning
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
- Lane Departure Warning
- High Beam Assist
These systems rely on cameras, radar, and sonar to monitor the area around the vehicle. Together, they help prevent collisions and increase driver awareness in daily driving scenarios. It is important to note that all driver-assist and safety features have limitations. Drivers must remain in control and monitor their surroundings at all times.
