Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new in-drive brake system to shape the next era of transportation. This new brake technology, integrated into the electric drive unit instead of the wheel, represents a major step forward in sustainability, efficiency, and maintenance reduction.
Key Highlights:
- Innovative in-drive brake: Integrated into the electric drive unit instead of the wheel.
- Minimal maintenance: Virtually maintenance-free, no rust, and significantly reduced wear.
- Environmental benefits: No particulate emissions, less noise, and improved aerodynamics.
- Enhanced comfort: Lighter wheel/tire combination reduces unsprung mass for better ride quality.
Rather than placing the brake inside the wheel, the new design integrates it directly into the electric drive unit, either at the front or rear axle. This innovative setup reduces the space required, minimizes wear, and eliminates the risk of rust, resulting in a virtually maintenance-free braking solution. Additionally, this design means no particulate emissions, making it more environmentally friendly.
Another major benefit of this approach is that it eliminates brake noise and the need for routine brake cleaning. The braking effect remains reliable and easy to control, even under demanding conditions, without performance fading. This new design not only improves braking efficiency but also contributes to a lighter and more compact overall vehicle structure.
The advanced brake system also enables a lighter wheel and tire combination, which reduces unsprung mass and enhances ride comfort. Furthermore, the elimination of brake cooling requirements allows for the use of fully closed wheels, significantly improving the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency.
