ITT, Arvedi Partner for Green Brakes

ITT Italia S.R.L., a subsidiary of US-based ITT Inc., and Italian steel manufacturer Acciaieria Arvedi S.p.A. have announced a strategic partnership for the supply of Arvzero™. This collaboration marks a significant step in ITT’s global sustainability efforts, aiming to substantially reduce its CO2 emissions while continuing to develop advanced brake pads for the automotive industry. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to environmental responsibility within the braking sector.

Key Highlights:

  • Carbon-neutral steel: ITT will utilize Arvzero™, a carbon-neutral steel produced by Acciaieria Arvedi.
  • Renewable energy: Arvzero™ is manufactured using 100% certified renewable electricity and recycled scrap.
  • Decarbonization efforts: Acciaieria Arvedi’s Cremona plant demonstrates significant progress in decarbonizing steel production.
  • Sustainable automotive future: The partnership represents a move towards more environmentally friendly applications in the automotive braking sector.
  • Leading brake pad supplier: ITT’s Friction business is a major supplier of brake pads for all vehicle types, including hybrid and electric vehicles.

Arvzero™ is a groundbreaking carbon-neutral steel, the culmination of over 30 years of dedicated research and development. Its production relies on the revolutionary Arvedi ESP™ technology, which utilizes an electric furnace loaded with selected recycled scrap and exclusively employs electricity certified from renewable sources. Acciaieria Arvedi has consistently demonstrated its capacity to achieve impactful results in the decarbonization of the steel production cycle, thanks to the capabilities of its modern Cremona plant. This facility specializes in producing thin and ultra-thin thicknesses of high-quality steels.

ITT’s Friction business, based in Barge, Italy, is a leading global supplier in the design, development, and production of friction materials for automotive applications. This includes brake pads for nearly all vehicle types across Europe, the U.S., and China. Notably, the company is also a prominent supplier of brake pads for hybrid and electric vehicles worldwide, reflecting its dedication to innovation and sustainability in emerging automotive technologies.

Luca Martinotto, General Manager of ITT Friction, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating that it represents a crucial stride towards a more sustainable future in the automotive industry and the braking sector specifically. Andrea Brambilla, Director of the Automotive Business Unit at Acciaieria Arvedi, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the agreement as a consolidation of the partnership between the companies and an important recognition of their efforts in technological innovation and sustainable steel production.
