Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2024 Hyundai Sonata vehicles due to a software issue affecting the brake lights. This defect may cause the brake lights to flash and not illuminate correctly, failing to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108 requirements. The recall affects approximately 38,331 vehicles. Hyundai will provide a free software update to correct the issue, with owner notifications expected to be mailed by October 5, 2024.
Key Highlights:
- Recall affects 38,331 units of 2024 Hyundai Sonata.
- Brake light software may cause flashing, leading to non-compliance with FMVSS number 108.
- Free software update will be provided by Hyundai dealers.
- Owner notifications to be mailed by October 5, 2024.
The recall, identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 24V583000, addresses a noncompliance issue with the brake lights on certain 2024 Hyundai Sonata models. The software for the brake lights was incorrectly selected during manufacturing, causing the brake lights to flash under heavy braking conditions at speeds over 30 mph. This malfunction increases the risk of a crash as it could confuse drivers of trailing vehicles regarding the leading vehicle’s braking intentions.
Hyundai has identified that 100% of the 38,331 affected vehicles have this defect. The problem originated from brake light software intended for foreign markets, which was mistakenly applied to vehicles produced for the U.S. market between October 18, 2023, and June 12, 2024.
Hyundai will notify owners via first-class mail, instructing them to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for a software update, free of charge. Additionally, Hyundai will reimburse owners for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred due to this issue, in accordance with the reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on February 22, 2024.
