Haldex’s fourth-generation Electronic Braking System (EBS), the EB+ 4.0, is now available to the aftermarket, offering significant improvements in safety, security, and ease of installation. Initially proven by OE trailer and truck manufacturers, this system consolidates multiple braking applications into a single, modular platform, setting a new standard for modern trailer braking technology. The EB+ 4.0 is designed to be Haldex’s core trailer braking platform for the next 10 to 15 years.
Key Highlights
- The EB+ 4.0 is a versatile, modular platform combining EBS, ABS, and ABS with rollover protection into one system.
- New safety innovations include Safe Parking+ to prevent roll-away incidents and an emergency brake override for more controlled stops.
- The system was designed with the aftermarket in mind, featuring serviceable components like screw-off pneumatic fittings for easier maintenance.
- It is lighter and more robust than previous generations, using an engineering-grade polymer to reduce environmental impact.
- The EB+ 4.0 is future-proof, with encrypted software updates designed to meet upcoming cybersecurity regulations like UN R156.
A Versatile and Modular Platform
The EB+ 4.0 braking system improves upon traditional pneumatic systems by using an electrical signal for more precise brake control. Its revolutionary modular design is a key feature, streamlining installation and maintenance for aftermarket customers. The platform is built around three main components: the electronic control unit (ECU), solenoid valves, and pressure modulators, all connected to a central manifold base.
This standardization allows for easy expansion. Additional modules for advanced functions like a pressure protection valve, mobiliser, or a spring brake-control module can be added seamlessly. The system comes standard in a 2S/2M configuration but can be extended up to an 8S/4M setup for larger applications, such as a 10-axle low-loader, by using intelligent slave modules that communicate with the master module.
Designed for the Aftermarket
During the eight-year development of the EB+ 4.0, Haldex held extensive discussions with aftermarket customers to ensure the final product met their specific needs. A significant outcome of this collaboration is the improved serviceability of the system. For example, if a pneumatic fitting on the main manifold is damaged, it can now be easily unscrewed and replaced, whereas previous designs required replacing the entire unit.
This focus on serviceability, combined with cost-efficiency and safety, was a top priority. Maintenance is further simplified by Haldex’s user-friendly diagnostic software, which allows technicians to quickly identify and resolve issues, maximizing vehicle uptime.
Advanced Safety and Security
Safety was a primary focus in the development of the EB+ 4.0, which introduces unique safety innovations. The system extends electronic control to the parking brake, enabling enhanced features like Safe Parking+. This intelligent system prevents unintentional vehicle movement by ensuring the truck and trailer are in a safe state before releasing the parking brakes. The driver must be in the cab and pressing the brake pedal, a critical feature for preventing roll-away incidents.
Another key feature is the reintroduction of the emergency brake override. If the energy supply between the truck and trailer is lost, this system allows the driver to use the remaining air pressure to operate the service brakes in a controlled manner, preventing wheel lock-ups and tire damage. Once pressure drops to a certain threshold, the emergency spring brake is applied as required by regulations.
Future-Ready Technology
The modularity of the EB+ 4.0 extends to its software, making it a future-proof investment. The basic EBS software can be upgraded with additional applications for controlling auxiliaries and connecting other devices, such as tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) and automated docking assistance.
Crucially, the system is prepared for upcoming changes in regulations, including the UN R156 cybersecurity standard. To comply, Haldex has developed a Software Update Management System portal that provides encrypted, secure control and evidence of all software updates. This commitment to future requirements ensures that the EB+ 4.0 will remain at the forefront of braking technology, providing aftermarket customers with a safe, reliable, and cost-efficient solution for years to come.
