CVSA Sets 2026 Brake Safety Week for August

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has scheduled its 2026 Brake Safety Week for Aug. 23–29, with inspectors across North America targeting brake drum and rotor condition under the Operation Airbrake program.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will hold its 2026 Brake Safety Week from Aug. 23 to 29, with inspectors across North America examining brake drum and rotor condition as the campaign’s named focus area. The week-long enforcement campaign runs under CVSA’s Operation Airbrake program, a joint effort with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Inspectors in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will conduct brake-system checks — primarily the North American Standard Level IV Inspection — on large trucks and buses, removing any vehicle with brake-related out-of-service violations from the road until repairs are made.

Highlights

  • Brake Safety Week runs Aug. 23–29, 2026, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
  • Brake drum and rotor condition is the campaign’s named focus area.
  • Inspectors will primarily perform the North American Standard Level IV Inspection on large trucks and buses.
  • CVSA will also stage an unannounced, one-day Brake Safety Day at some point during 2026.

What Will Inspectors Check?

Throughout the week, CVSA-certified inspectors conduct brake-system inspections at weigh stations, fixed sites, and roadside locations across North America. The Level IV Inspection concentrates on a single set of components, letting inspectors document brake conditions in detail rather than running a full driver-and-vehicle review. Vehicles found with brake-related out-of-service violations — or any other critical out-of-service condition — are pulled from service until the defects are corrected.

This year’s effort directs added attention to drum and rotor condition. Inspectors will record data on the state of these components alongside their standard violation reporting, building a data set CVSA analyzes and releases publicly after the campaign closes.

Operation Airbrake and a Second 2026 Campaign

Brake Safety Week is one of two brake-focused campaigns CVSA runs each year through Operation Airbrake, its enforcement and education partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The second is an unannounced, one-day Brake Safety Day the Alliance can stage at any point during the year. Unlike the scheduled Brake Safety Week, that initiative is not publicized in advance.

Both campaigns target brake-related defects, which rank as the most common category of out-of-service violations cited during commercial vehicle roadside inspections.
