General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for specific 2023-2024 Cadillac LYRIQ all-wheel-drive vehicles due to a defect in the anti-lock brake system (ABS). The issue can lead to unexpected ABS activation, resulting in a loss of braking pressure, which increases the risk of a crash. Affected owners will receive a software update to fix the problem.

Key Highlights:

  • Affected Vehicles: 2023-2024 Cadillac LYRIQ all-wheel drive
  • Potential Issue: ABS may activate unexpectedly, causing a release of brake pressure
  • Safety Risk: Reduced braking performance or inoperative brakes may increase the risk of a crash
  • Total Units Affected: 21,469 vehicles
  • Remedy: Software update through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer at no cost to the owner
  • Notification Date: Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on September 23, 2024
  • Contact Information: Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or EV Concierge at 1-844-EV-CADILLAC (1-844-382-2345)

The defect poses a significant safety risk as the release of braking pressure may result in reduced stopping performance or complete brake failure, increasing the likelihood of a crash. The issue is rare and has been linked to a specific sequence of wheel movements that trigger the ABS to continue releasing brake pressure.

GM will address this issue by updating the software in the affected vehicles’ electronic brake control modules. Owners will be notified and can receive the update via an over-the-air (OTA) update or by visiting a GM dealer. All vehicles under this recall are covered under warranty, and no reimbursement is required.

GM’s investigation into this issue began in May 2024 and confirmed the defect after reports of minor accidents potentially related to the ABS software issue. The company is not aware of any injuries or fatalities associated with this defect. GM plans to notify dealers and owners in August and September 2024, respectively.
