General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for specific 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV all-wheel-drive models due to a software defect in the brake control module. This flaw may cause the adaptive cruise control (ACC) system to fail to engage the brakes as intended, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects 2,890 vehicles, and GM has committed to updating the faulty software at no cost to owners.

Key Highlights:

  • NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V012000
  • Affected Vehicles: 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV all-wheel-drive models not equipped with Super Cruise.
  • Issue Identified: Incorrect software calibration prevents the ACC system from properly activating the service brakes.
  • Safety Risk: The vehicle may not decelerate as expected when ACC is engaged, posing a crash risk.
  • Remedy: Dealers will update the brake system control module software free of charge.
  • Notification Timeline: GM will notify owners via mail starting March 3, 2025.

Details of the Recall:

The defect was discovered on October 3, 2024, when a GM engineer flagged an issue where the ACC system on a test vehicle failed to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Following a thorough investigation, GM confirmed that the software in the brake system control module for certain all-wheel-drive Equinox EV models had been incorrectly calibrated. The defect prevents the ACC system from properly activating the brakes, instead relying solely on propulsion torque to slow the vehicle.

GM has reported five related field complaints but no accidents or injuries associated with this issue. The defect has been corrected in production as of December 6, 2024.

Remedy Details:

GM will update the faulty software in the brake system control module for all affected vehicles, with some unsold units receiving the update via over-the-air technology. Owners are encouraged to contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at nhtsa.gov for further assistance.

Owner Guidance:
If your vehicle is affected, you will receive a notification letter by mail. For additional questions, contact Chevrolet customer service or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
