BYD has responded to a ‘Not Recommended’ safety grading from Euro NCAP by significantly upgrading the Assisted Driving system in its ATTO 3 model. The improvements, delivered via an over-the-air software update for earlier vehicles and a new system in the latest models, have resulted in substantially improved safety scores.
Key Highlights
- BYD updated the ATTO 3’s Assisted Driving system after Euro NCAP issued a ‘Not Recommended’ grade in 2024 due to serious performance shortcomings.
- An over-the-air software update elevates the system in 2022 models from ‘Not Recommended’ to a ‘Moderate’ rating.
- The 2025 model-year ATTO 3 includes a completely new system, which now achieves a ‘Good’ rating from Euro NCAP.
- Owners of pre-2025 models are advised to install the update or contact a BYD dealer for assistance.

Initial Euro NCAP Assessment
In 2024, Euro NCAP issued its first-ever ‘Not Recommended’ grading to the 2022 BYD ATTO 3. Safety experts determined that the vehicle’s Intelligent Cruise Control system had critical flaws. The assessment revealed that the system failed to respond correctly when approaching other vehicles and did not take appropriate action when the driver was unresponsive. This led to low scores of 55% in Assistance Competence and 35% in Safety Backup.
BYD’s System Enhancements
In response to the findings, BYD has implemented significant changes. An over-the-air software update is available for 2022 model-year ATTO 3s. Once updated, the vehicle’s Assisted Driving system qualifies for a ‘Moderate’ grading, with scores improving to 60% in Assistance Competence and 72% in Safety Backup.
Furthermore, the 2025 model-year ATTO 3 is equipped with an entirely new Assisted Driving system. This new hardware and software combination earns a ‘Good’ grading from Euro NCAP, achieving scores of 67% for Assistance Competence and 80% for Safety Backup.

The Future of Assisted Driving Tests
Euro NCAP noted that BYD’s positive response demonstrates the effectiveness of its safety evaluations. The organization announced plans to introduce new Assisted Driving protocols and on-road vehicle testing starting in 2026. Richard Schram, Technical Director at Euro NCAP, explained that these evolving testing methods push manufacturers to create more sophisticated systems while ensuring the driver remains engaged. Euro NCAP recommends that consumers perform extensive test drives to understand a vehicle’s specific driver-assistance features before making a purchase.
