BYD Recall: 183,211 Vehicles Over Brake Pedal Defect

BYD is recalling 183,211 Tang and Qin vehicles in China. Regulators say brake pedal stopper pads can crack and detach, leaving brake lights illuminated. Dealers will replace the pads free of charge.

BYD is recalling 183,211 Tang and Qin series vehicles in China because brake pedal stopper pads can crack and detach, leaving the brake lights illuminated when the pedal is not pressed. The recall takes effect immediately and covers vehicles built between 2014 and 2022, according to a notice from China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). Two BYD entities, BYD Auto Industry Co. and BYD Auto Co., filed the recall plans with the regulator this week.

Highlights

  • 183,211 vehicles are covered across two recall filings, S2026M0116V and S2026M0117V.
  • 142,895 Tang-series vehicles are affected, spanning the Tang, Tang DM, and Tang EV lines.
  • 40,316 Qin-series vehicles built from June 27, 2014, to June 9, 2019, are included.
  • Free replacement with improved stopper pads will be handled by authorized dealers.

Which BYD Vehicles Are Affected?

The SAMR notice splits the recall population by manufacturing entity and model line.

Brake Pedal Stopper Pad Defect

According to the notice, a manufacturing problem caused a batch-level material abnormality in the brake pedal stopper pads fitted to some vehicles in the recall population. After prolonged use, the pad may crack and break apart.

In extreme cases, the pad can fall off entirely. That causes the brake lights to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is not pressed, sending an incorrect signal to following vehicles. SAMR classifies the condition as a safety hazard.

Remedy and Owner Notification

BYD will have authorized dealers replace the stopper pad with an improved part at no charge. Some vehicles in the recall population already received the improved pad, and the notice states those vehicles do not need a second replacement.

The two BYD entities will notify owners by registered mail, telephone, and text message. Owners can also call BYD’s Dynasty customer service hotline at 950858, according to the notice.
