Brake Engineering Drops Surcharges on Top-Selling Remanufactured Calipers

Brake Engineering eliminates surcharges on its top 110 remanufactured calipers, simplifying aftermarket purchasing while reinforcing OE-quality standards amid growing industry concerns over competitor part defects.

Brake Engineering is eliminating surcharges on its 110 best-selling remanufactured brake calipers effective April 13, 2026. The move removes a longstanding purchasing barrier for garages and motor factors across the UK aftermarket. A further 90 calipers will carry a maximum surcharge of just £5 (approximately $6.76 USD).

Highlights

  • Top 110 calipers now surcharge-free: The company’s highest-volume remanufactured lines no longer carry any refundable deposit at point of purchase.
  • Reduced surcharges on next 90 SKUs: The remaining best-sellers carry a maximum £5 ($6.76 USD) surcharge, down from previous levels.
  • Quality context: The pricing shift follows Brake Engineering’s independent study that identified 29 defects across three competing caliper brands.
  • UK remanufacturing commitment: All Brake Engineering calipers are remanufactured to OE specifications at the company’s Wrexham facility with full wear-component replacement.

Simplifying the Surcharge Model

Surcharges have traditionally served as refundable deposits tied to the return of old caliper cores, supporting the circular economy by ensuring a steady supply of units for remanufacturing. However, Brake Engineering acknowledged that the process adds complexity in fast-paced workshop environments, particularly when competing against products sold without a surcharge requirement.

By removing the deposit entirely on its most popular lines, the company aims to reduce administrative burden for garages while keeping remanufactured products competitive against new-unit alternatives.

Cyril Daly, Head of Passenger Car Sales at ZF Aftermarket, said: “This is a major step forward in making remanufactured calipers easier to buy and easier to work with. We know that surcharges can sometimes be seen as an extra layer of complexity, so by removing them across our most popular products, we’re helping garages save time and reduce admin, while still benefiting from a high-quality, OE-standard solution.”

Quality Concerns Across the Aftermarket

The announcement arrives against a backdrop of growing scrutiny over aftermarket parts quality. Brake Engineering’s recent independent study tested three new caliper brands entering the market and found all three failed to meet OEM standards and critical tolerances. The 29 identified defects included casting porosity, oxide contamination, and inconsistent microstructures — all of which can compromise structural integrity.

Testing also raised concerns about material composition, seal quality, and dimensional accuracy. Potential consequences ranged from increased vibration and inconsistent pedal feel to, in severe cases, catastrophic component failure. The BRAKE Report previously covered both the initial findings and the broader industry debate the study generated.

Daly added: “There’s a growing conversation in the aftermarket about quality and safety, particularly as more lower-cost components enter the market. Our focus is on removing barriers to doing the right thing. By simplifying the surcharge model, we’re making it easier for garages to choose a product that meets OE standards and delivers reliable performance.”

Remanufacturing Standards

All Brake Engineering calipers are remanufactured in the UK at the company’s Wrexham Centre of Excellence. Each unit undergoes a 10-stage process that includes full replacement of wear components — seals, pistons, and sliders — followed by multi-stage pressure testing to verify consistent performance. The company has produced more than eight million remanufactured calipers since its founding in 1981.

Brake Engineering said the surcharge reduction marks a step toward modernizing the remanufacturing model to align with current aftermarket purchasing expectations while reinforcing its emphasis on quality, safety, and sustainability.
