Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2019 Audi E-Tron Quattro vehicles due to a critical brake pedal defect that could lead to brake failure. The issue stems from an improperly assembled fastener that connects the brake pedal to the brake booster, potentially causing the brake pedal to detach. This defect significantly increases the risk of a crash. Audi will replace the brake boosters free of charge, and affected owners will be notified by mail starting October 18, 2024.

Key Highlights:

  • Recall Affects: 206 Audi E-Tron Quattro vehicles from 2019.
  • Defect: Improperly assembled fastener may cause the brake pedal to detach from the brake booster.
  • Safety Risk: Detachment could result in a loss of brake function, only allowing braking via the emergency system, which increases the risk of an accident.
  • Remedy: Audi will replace the defective brake boosters at no cost to the owners.
  • Notification: Owners will receive a notification letter by October 18, 2024.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has assigned this recall the campaign number 24V621000. Audi’s internal recall number is 46P6. This issue arose from a production deviation that occurred in 2019, with all affected vehicles being identified based on specific parameters from the manufacturing period.

In February 2024, Audi’s Product Safety Committee was alerted to the potential issue following three customer complaints from European markets regarding unusual brake noises and pedal reset issues. An investigation revealed that the connection between the brake pedal and brake booster might not have been assembled according to manufacturing specifications, leading to the possibility of complete separation.

Owners of affected vehicles can contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 for more information. Alternatively, they may reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov.

Audi has confirmed that as of August 19, 2024, there have been no reported injuries, crashes, or fires related to this defect. The company has also implemented optimizations in the manufacturing process to prevent this issue in future production.
