Detailed Information
Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
Submission Date: June 3, 2024
NHTSA Recall No.: 24V-394
Manufacturer Recall No.: 24S36
Affected Vehicles: 2024 Ford Mustang with manual transmissions
Production Dates: September 27, 2022 – May 23, 2024
The issue was discovered when Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) reviewed reports of underhood fires in two 2024 Mustangs. The investigations revealed that the clutch pressure line might have been improperly retained, leading to potential contact with hot exhaust components and subsequent brake fluid leakage.
Description of Defect
The clutch pressure line may not be properly secured to the vehicle’s firewall stud. This improper retention can cause the line to contact hot exhaust components, melt, and leak brake fluid. While this does not affect the brake system’s fluid volume, it can prevent gear changes and potentially cause engine stalling. If the leaked brake fluid accumulates near a hot surface, it could result in smoke and an underhood fire.
Safety Risks
- Loss of Drive Power: Increases the risk of a crash.
- Underhood Fire: Increases the risk of injury.
Cause and Warning
The defect arises from the possible omission or improper installation of the barrel nut that retains the clutch pressure line during production. No specific warnings occur before the issue manifests.
Remedy Program
Owners will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for inspection and necessary repairs at no cost. Ford’s reimbursement plan covers remedy costs paid by vehicle owners prior to the recall notification, ending July 5, 2024.
Recall Schedule
- Dealer Notification: Expected by June 3, 2024
- Owner Notification: Mailing begins June 17, 2024, and completes by June 21, 2024.
