Why Copper Grease Damages Modern Brakes

Brake technicians and garages are being cautioned to stop using copper grease when installing replacement brake pads. Juratek, a prominent braking specialist under Frasle Mobility, highlights that this once-common practice is now outdated and can harm today’s advanced braking systems. As technology evolves, so must the methods used to maintain vehicle safety and performance.

Key Highlights

  • Copper grease increases brake noise and shortens component life.
  • It disrupts ABS and EPS systems due to its conductivity.
  • Modern pads feature anti-noise shims or coatings for better performance.
  • Rubber seals degrade with copper grease, risking leaks.
  • Ceramic or silicone lubricants are safer alternatives.

In earlier times, copper grease was a go-to solution for reducing brake squeal. However, modern brake pads, like those from Juratek, come equipped with advanced anti-noise shims or coatings. These are tested to SAE2521 standards in anechoic chambers with full vehicle assemblies, ensuring they effectively minimize noise and vibration. Applying copper grease undermines these features, increasing noise and wear on brake components.

The risks extend beyond noise. Copper’s conductivity can interfere with electronic systems such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EPS (Electronic Power Steering). Matt Leeming, Head of Product Management for Frasle Mobility in the UK, notes, “Today’s braking systems are highly integrated. Copper grease can cause serious malfunctions, especially in ABS and EPS, where electrical interference is a real threat.”

Additionally, copper grease can damage rubber seals, leading to potential fluid leaks or brake failure. It may also cause pads to stick in the caliper, reducing braking efficiency. While it remains useful for preventing corrosion on non-braking parts, it’s unsuitable for brake contact points. Juratek recommends ceramic or silicone-based lubricants, which align with modern system requirements.

Following manufacturer guidelines is critical to avoid warranty issues or costly repairs. For more details on Juratek’s braking solutions, contact their sales team at 01302 727 312, email [email protected], or visit www.juratek.com.
