Wabtec Launches New Manufacturing Hub

Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: WAB) has inaugurated its new manufacturing campus in Rohtak, India, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion. The $18 million (Rs. 150 crore) investment underscores Wabtec’s commitment to enhancing its production capabilities and meeting the growing demands of the transit rail sector. The new facility will initially focus on producing transit rail components and subsystems, with plans to expand into other product lines in the future.

Several key executives attended the grand opening, including Pascal Schweitzer, President – Transit Business, Sujatha Narayan, Senior Vice President and India Regional Leader, and Ajay Mani, Managing Director – Transit India. Schweitzer emphasized the strategic importance of the Indian market, stating, “India is an important growth market for Wabtec, especially for the transit business. The new site will further improve Wabtec’s ability to deliver enhanced value through our diverse product offerings for both Indian and global customers.

The Rohtak factory spans 10,000 square meters and will start by producing axle-mounted disc brake systems, distributor valves, brake calipers, and actuators. These components are crucial for freight cars, metro coaches, and locomotives for Indian Railways and metro systems. This new campus reflects Wabtec’s dedication to the “Make in India” initiative and its long-term vision for the Indian market.

Sujatha Narayan highlighted future investment plans, saying, “We intend to grow this site with plans to invest an additional $10 million (Rs. 80 crores) over the next few years. We currently employ 300 people and as the business grows, we do intend to add another 200 employees with a keen focus on diversity hires.

Wabtec’s Transit business in India is well-positioned, offering a wide range of solutions through its manufacturing sites in Hosur and Rohtak. The company’s product portfolio includes brake systems, couplers, pantographs, relays, air-conditioning systems, passenger access doors, and friction solutions. Wabtec’s large engineering presence in Hosur and Bengaluru provides robust engineering and service support globally.

As one of India’s largest rail equipment manufacturers, Wabtec has supplied over 600 locomotives to Indian Railways. With subsystems installed in over 18,000 LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches and locomotives, Wabtec employs 3,000 people across India, reinforcing its leadership in the industry.
