Volvo Trucks Recalls 800 VNL Units for Parking Brake Defect

Volvo Trucks recalls 800 VNL (4) trucks for a parking brake defect that may cause rollaway. Dealers will replace brake chambers with auxiliary parking brake units at no charge.

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling approximately 800 model year 2024–2027 VNL (4) vehicles over a parking brake holding force issue. NHTSA Campaign Number 26V076 covers trucks with 6×4 axle configurations and electronically controlled suspensions that lack auxiliary parking brakes. The defect could allow a vehicle to roll away while parked, increasing crash risk.

Highlights

  • 800 Volvo VNL (4) trucks from model years 2024–2027 are affected by insufficient parking brake force due to weight biasing.
  • Rollaway risk exists when vehicles operate in weight-bias mode, reducing downforce on the parking brake axle.
  • Dealers will replace brake chambers with units that include auxiliary parking brakes at no cost to owners.
  • Owner notifications are expected to be mailed by April 10, 2026.

Defect Details

The recall targets VNL (4) trucks produced between Oct. 2, 2023, and Feb. 4, 2026. These vehicles feature electronically controlled suspensions but were not equipped with auxiliary parking brakes. As a result, when operating in weight-bias mode, the drive axle fitted with parking brakes may lose enough downforce to hold the truck stationary.

NHTSA identified the root cause as an inadequate design for the specific combination of features. However, no warning indicators alert drivers to the condition. Volvo reported zero warranty claims, field reports, accidents, or injuries tied to the defect at the time of the filing.

Investigation Timeline

Volvo’s internal review spanned several months before the recall decision. On Nov. 19, 2025, a Volvo corporate transport company reported a vehicle roll incident on site. The company’s Safety Office then opened a product safety investigation.

The Product Safety Evaluation Committee conducted three reviews. The first occurred on Dec. 2, 2025, and requested additional information. A second review on Dec. 15, 2025, called for ongoing testing data. By the third review on Jan. 26, 2026, the committee recommended escalation.

On Feb. 3, 2026, the Product Safety Committee confirmed a safety defect and authorized the recall. Volvo issued a stop-ship order on Feb. 4, 2026, and submitted a build deviation request on Feb. 9, 2026.

Remedy and Owner Notification

Dealers will replace affected brake chambers with new units that include auxiliary parking brakes. The repair will be performed free of charge. In production, new brake chambers with auxiliary parking brakes are now standard for the affected configuration.

Dealer notifications were scheduled for Feb. 17, 2026. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by April 10, 2026. Vehicle Identification Numbers involved in the recall are searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning Feb. 17, 2026.

Owners may contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 800-528-6586. The manufacturer’s internal recall number is RVXX2601.
