Shyft Recalls 836 RV Chassis Over Brake Lights

Shyft Group is recalling 836 Spartan RV Chassis built for Class A motorhomes after a brake pressure switch was found to leave stop lamps illuminated when the driver is not braking.

Shyft Group is recalling 836 Spartan RV Chassis units built for Class A motorhomes because a faulty brake pressure switch can leave the stop lamps illuminated when the driver is not applying the brakes. The condition places the affected chassis out of compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108, which covers lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. According to the company, every unit in the recalled population is presumed to have the defect.

Highlights

  • 836 Spartan RV Chassis units across model years 2024 through 2027 are affected, with Shyft estimating 100% contain the defect.
  • The brake pressure switch can retain residual air pressure, illuminating the stop lamps when the service brake is not applied — a noncompliance with FMVSS 108.
  • Shyft will replace the pressure switch free of charge, with owner notification letters scheduled to mail June 5, 2026.
  • The recall spans K1, K2, K3, and K4 chassis built between August 2023 and October 2025.

What Causes the Stop Lamps to Stay On?

The brake pressure switch in the air brake system can hold enough residual air pressure to keep the stop lamps lit even when the service brake is released. Shyft traces the cause to a minimum release pressure that was not specified when the switch was selected. The affected component is a normally-closed, single-pole single-throw pressure switch carrying part number 0108-GG3-031. The brake lights can illuminate without any warning to the driver.

The Safety Risk

Stop lamps that remain on when the vehicle is not braking can confuse trailing drivers about the operator’s intentions. According to the filing, that ambiguity could increase the risk of a crash, which is the basis for the FMVSS 108 noncompliance. The BRAKE Report has covered comparable stop-lamp recalls, including a Ford Hydroboost defect on F-59 and F-53 stripped chassis, and Shyft’s earlier parking-brake recall on its Blue Arc electric trucks.

Affected Vehicles

The recalled population was identified through a where-used query for the chassis on which the switch was installed.

The Remedy

Shyft will replace the pressure switch at no charge. The replacement carries a specified pressure setting that closes the brake-lamp circuit, so the lamps illuminate only when the service brake is applied. The company says the corrected switch entered production last fall. Owner notification letters are scheduled to mail June 5, 2026, under a phased recall, and Shyft’s number for the campaign is 26-05. Owners can reach Shyft customer service at 1-800-237-7806 or reference NHTSA campaign 26V292.
