Volvo Trucks Boosts Safety, Efficiency in New VNR

Volvo Trucks has introduced the all-new Volvo VNR, a regional haul truck designed for North America. Built on a cutting-edge platform, it prioritizes safety, fuel efficiency, and versatility. With advanced brakes, innovative tech, and a bold redesign, the VNR promises to transform urban and regional transport while cutting emissions.

Key Highlights

  • Redesign Revolution: A 90% overhaul improves aerodynamics and slashes fuel use by up to 7.5%.
  • Safety First: Features like automatic emergency braking and side airbags enhance driver and pedestrian protection.
  • Future-Ready: The platform supports electric, hydrogen, and autonomous tech for years ahead.

Volvo’s latest offering follows the 2024 launch of the long-haul Volvo VNL, sharing the same forward-thinking platform. This new architecture not only boosts efficiency but also integrates a 24-volt electrical system and active safety tools—paving the way for fully autonomous trucks. Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, emphasized its purpose: “The all-new Volvo VNR was designed specifically for the demanding nature of regional and urban delivery.” He highlighted its advanced safety features and connectivity as proof of Volvo’s innovation focus.

Fuel savings come from smarter design. Enhanced aerodynamics, a next-gen D13 VGT engine, and Eco-roll tech—which lets the truck glide downhill—cut CO2 emissions significantly. These upgrades make the VNR a leader in sustainable trucking without compromising power.

Safety takes center stage with Volvo Active Driver Assist, offering collision warnings, emergency braking, and lane alerts. The truck also introduces cab-mounted side curtain airbags for both driver and passenger—a rare feature in this class. A Camera Monitor System replaces bulky mirrors with sleek, aerodynamic cameras, improving visibility in tight urban spaces.

Versatility shines through its options: from the nimble VNR 300 to the premium VNR 660, it suits diverse needs. Available in 4×2, 6×2, and 6×4 setups, it’s customizable for regional or longer hauls. Production kicks off soon at Volvo’s Virginia plant, with sales starting in 2025. The VNR isn’t just a truck—it’s a safer, greener future for North American fleets.
