Volkswagen Recalls 2025 ID. Buzz

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. has initiated a recall for 5,637 2025 ID. Buzz vehicles due to a noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 135 and 101. The issue involves an incorrect brake system warning light on the instrument panel, which may display an amber-colored International Organization for Standards (ISO) icon instead of the required red “BRAKE” lettering or prescribed symbols. This could confuse drivers, potentially leading them to ignore critical brake system warnings and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall, identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 25V233000 and Volkswagen’s recall number 90A2, affects vehicles produced between September 9, 2024, and February 11, 2025. Volkswagen will address the issue by updating the instrument panel software at no cost to owners, with notifications expected by June 6, 2025.

Key Highlights:

  • Affected Vehicles: 5,637 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz models.
  • Issue: Incorrect brake system warning light symbol and color.
  • Safety Risk: Potential driver confusion, increasing crash risk.
  • Remedy: Free software update for instrument panel.
  • Notification Date: Owner letters to be mailed by June 6, 2025.
  • Contact: Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.

The problem was discovered during internal testing on February 18, 2025, prompting Volkswagen to conduct an analysis and confirm the noncompliance. The root cause was traced to incorrect coding in the data container of the instrument cluster. In the event of a brake system malfunction, the display shows an amber ISO icon—an exclamation mark in a circle with arcs—rather than the mandated red “BRAKE” text. For Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) failures, the ISO ABS icon fails to meet FMVSS 135’s 3.2 mm letter height requirement.

Volkswagen’s remedy involves a data container software update to ensure compliance with FMVSS standards. The update will be performed by dealers, who were notified on April 11, 2025. Production corrections are scheduled for week 16 of 2025. Owners can contact Volkswagen or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline for assistance or visit www.safercar.gov for more information. No field claims have been reported, and the recall leverages a planned service action to minimize inconvenience.
