Driving Environmental Progress

TMD Friction’s Sustainability Roadmap 2040 outlines clear goals for reducing emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3. In 2024, the company achieved a 46% reduction in CO2 emissions for Scopes 1 and 2 through initiatives like adopting greener energy sources, optimizing manufacturing processes, and improving waste management. Additionally, 52% of its energy came from renewable sources, moving closer to the 2030 target of 100% renewable energy. The company also reduced energy usage by 3% through equipment upgrades and enhanced heat recovery systems.

A notable achievement was the 31% reduction in VOCs, exceeding the 2040 goal of 20%. This was made possible by investing in new technologies, including a VOC-free adhesive, which minimizes harmful emissions in production.

Empowering Employees for Change

TMD Friction’s Kaizen Programme empowers employees to lead sustainability initiatives. In 2024, 162 global projects were launched, with nine sustainability-focused projects saving over €631,000. One standout project replaced foam packaging with a honeycomb structure made from recycled paper, reducing environmental impact while maintaining functionality. This innovation will replace 19 types of foam, marking a significant step in sustainable packaging.

David Baines, CEO and President, emphasized the role of employees, stating, “We couldn’t achieve such ambitious goals without the commitment and passion from our employees. Through initiatives like our Kaizen Programme, they are making a real difference.”

Advancing Waste Management

TMD Friction is committed to reducing landfill waste by 20% in 2025, 50% in 2030, and 70% by 2040 through its 5Rs strategy (refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle). In 2024, the company increased onsite recycling by 14%. Regionally, TMD Mexico recycled 16 tonnes of waste wood into sustainable furniture, preventing landfill disposal and supporting local craftsmanship.

Looking Ahead to 2025
