Software Update: Hyundai Recalls IONIQ 5 N Vehicles

Hyundai Motor America has initiated a recall for 1,589 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N vehicles due to a software issue affecting braking and acceleration, posing a crash risk. The problem stems from errors in the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) and Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) software, impacting vehicles with Left-Foot Braking (LFB) and N e-Shift features.

Hyundai is addressing the issue through a free software update, available over-the-air (OTA) or at dealerships. Owners are advised to avoid using LFB or N e-Shift features until repairs are completed. This recall replaces a previous one (25V-065), and vehicles repaired earlier will require the new fix.

Key Highlights:

  • Affected Vehicles: 1,589 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N models, produced between December 18, 2023, and January 7, 2025.
  • Issue: Software errors cause reduced braking performance with LFB and unexpected acceleration with N e-Shift.
  • Safety Risk: Longer stopping distances and unintended acceleration increase crash likelihood.
  • Remedy: Free IEB and VCU software updates via OTA or dealers, with owner notifications starting June 9, 2025.
  • Contact: Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 (recall number 277) or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.

The defect arises when LFB, designed for performance driving, triggers ABS depressurization, reducing braking efficiency. Separately, VCU software may cause momentary acceleration after the driver releases the pedal in N e-Shift mode. No warning indicators alert drivers to these issues, heightening the risk. Hyundai began implementing corrected software in production on April 2, 2025. Owners will receive notification letters and can opt for OTA updates through the Bluelink system or visit a dealer.

Hyundai will reimburse prior repair costs per its NHTSA plan. For more details, visit www.safercar.gov.
