Singapore’s First Smart Bus Braking System

SBS Transit is taking a bold step forward in enhancing bus safety across Singapore by introducing the nation’s first intelligent braking technology. In collaboration with Streamax, a leader in AIoT solutions, and TNT Surveillance, a local expert in surveillance systems, SBS Transit is developing the Responsive and Adaptive Braking System (RABS). This cutting-edge system promises to deliver a safer, smoother ride by minimizing the sudden jolts that often occur during emergency braking, protecting passengers from potential injuries.

Key Highlights

  • Partnership: SBS Transit teams up with Streamax and TNT Surveillance.
  • Technology: Introduces the Responsive and Adaptive Braking System (RABS).
  • Safety Focus: Reduces jolts and injuries during emergency stops.
  • Advanced Features: Employs radar sensors and cameras for real-time monitoring.
  • Adaptability: Adjusts braking based on speed, traffic, and weather.
  • Data Sharing: Sends real-time updates to the Bus Operations Control Centre.
  • Pilot Launch: Set for the first half of 2026.
  • Integration: Enhances existing safety tools like Golden Eye and Mobileye.

This initiative stems from a Memorandum of Understanding between SBS Transit, Streamax, and TNT Surveillance. The RABS system is designed to tackle a common issue with traditional emergency brakes, which can lock up and cause abrupt stops. By contrast, RABS ensures a more gradual deceleration, safeguarding both seated and standing passengers from being thrown off balance.

The system relies on radar sensors and cameras to scan the bus’s surroundings continuously. It reacts to potential hazards in just 40 milliseconds—far quicker than a human driver—helping to avoid collisions while keeping passenger disruption to a minimum. Its adaptive nature allows it to tweak braking force based on factors like road conditions, traffic flow, and weather, ensuring optimal performance in any scenario.

Beyond preventing accidents, RABS also moderates braking force during unavoidable collisions, reducing impact severity. It further enhances safety by transmitting real-time data, such as video feeds and incident details, to the Bus Operations Control Centre for swift operational responses.

Slated for a pilot rollout in the first half of 2026, RABS will join SBS Transit’s suite of safety technologies, including Golden Eye and Mobileye. According to Group CEO Jeffrey Sim, “Road safety is our top priority. We’re committed to advancing safety standards across public transport through innovation and collaboration.”
