Knorr-Bremse, a global leader in rail systems, has secured a significant contract with Hitachi Rail to equip up to 30 metro trains for the Rome Metro. This partnership will enhance the safety, sustainability, and reliability of Rome’s urban rail network, addressing the growing demand for efficient public transportation in the city.
Key Highlights
- Framework agreement for up to 30 metro trains
- Supply of braking, coupling, and entrance systems
- Strengthens Knorr-Bremse’s position in the coupling systems market
- Total order value in the lower to mid double-digit million-euro range
- Systems designed for safety, sustainability, and reliability
- Part of broader investments in Italy’s rail infrastructure
The contract includes an initial order for 14 trains, with an option for an additional 16 units. Knorr-Bremse will provide state-of-the-art braking systems featuring ‘FlexControl Modular’ brake control units and ‘WheelGrip’ technologies. These advanced systems ensure precise and consistently reliable braking performance, which is crucial for the safety and efficiency of metro operations.
In addition to braking systems, Knorr-Bremse will supply modular coupling systems, including ‘AutoLink’ automatic front couplers and ‘ShortLink’ semi-permanent couplers. These systems are tailored to meet specific customer needs and are designed for durability and ease of maintenance, ensuring safe and reliable train operations.
The metro trains will also be equipped with entrance systems from Knorr-Bremse’s brand IFE. These weight-optimized and maintenance-friendly doors are engineered to withstand the frequent opening and closing cycles typical of metro traffic, contributing to smooth and efficient operations.
Dr. Nicolas Lange, Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG, emphasized the importance of this project: “Safe, smooth, and sustainable rail mobility is a key element in transportation strategies for major urban centers. With this project, we’re proud to be contributing a selection of system technologies to yet another large European metro network.”
This contract marks a significant milestone for Knorr-Bremse, reinforcing its position in the international coupling systems market. The partnership with Hitachi Rail comes as many local transport operators, including those in Italy, are expecting increased passenger numbers due to growing urban centers and traffic. Operators are investing in expanding their rail fleets, and Knorr-Bremse is playing a key role as a trusted systems partner in several large-scale rail transit projects in Italy and beyond.
With this latest contract, Knorr-Bremse continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing innovative and reliable solutions for urban rail mobility, contributing to the development of sustainable and efficient transportation systems worldwide.
